How to Install Adobe Flash in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

flash player ubuntu 14.04

This quick tutorial is going to show you how to install Adobe Flash player in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr for Firefox and other web browser. If you’re using Google Chrome, flash player is already installed by default.

For 32 bit system:

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the command below to update your package lists:

sudo apt-get update

Then open Ubuntu Software Center, search for and install the package flashplugin-installer.

flashplugin-installer

It extracts the 32-bit Flash player library from the adobe-flashplugin package (which is retrieved from http://archive.canonical.com/) and configures itself as default for Internet browsers.

For 64 bit system:

Because “flashplugin-installer” installs the 32-bit version of Flash and a related compatibility library which may be slower and less stable, so it’s recommended to install the adobe-flashplugin package from canonial partners repository.

First open “Software & Updates” from unity dash, then enable the partners repository under Other “Software” tab.

After that, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to install the flash:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get purge adobe-flash{plugin,-properties-gtk}

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

That’s it. Enjoy!

i did your given process but adobe flash not instaled and this shows in terminal(given below). im using ubuntu 14.04…. plz help me…

    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done
Package adobe-flashplugin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package ‘adobe-flashplugin’ has no installation candidate

    • In my opinion, both of you guys must have not checked the right “Canonical partners” and “Canonical partners (source)” in the Software & Updates window, OR checked the wrong ones. Sometimes there more than one copy of Repos with those names, because they are from older Ubuntu version previously installed on your PCs. Double check if they are Trusty Tahr’s URLs.

    • then you should upo date your ubuntu.then it will work

thanks, this article is very helpful. i have problem regarding software update on my lubuntu 14.04 and
‘no proprietary drivers are in use on this system’ how to resolve this problem

  4. I need to know what version of flash this is. Less than flashplayer 11.7 is no good for me.

    • After version 11.2, the Flash Player plugin for Linux will only be available via the “Pepper” API as part of the Google Chrome. Use Google Chrome if you want flashplayer 11.7 in Ubuntu Linux

  5. Thanks! Quick, easy and to the point.

  6. I too failed to get adobe flash palyer installed.

I am running a 64bit machine and just had Ubunto 14.04 installed.

I followed your instructions, but; do I type both lines meaning
“sudo apt-get update” and “sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin” or just one?

Also when I type either one, the computer asks me for a password. I type it in, but it doesn’t seem to take.

    Help please.

    Thanks,

    Alan

  7. I was having issues getting to the Canonical Partners option. Turns out I needed to fully type in “Software & Updates” – that got me to the right place. Then everything worked. Ubuntu 14.04LTS 64 bit. Thank you sir!

  8. after trying many different ways on my 64bit laptop with ubuntu 14.04…this worked great
    ..quick and easy…thanks much!!

  9. Worked just like you said. No issues whatsoever. Thanks bro!

  10. its unable to locate package adobe-flasplugin.
I’ve checked the software and updates as well still it’s unable to locate

  11. Thank you soo much, finally i found the real way to install that plugin, i added this website to my chromium fav Bar Thx u again.

  12. I tried to install flash for my 64 bit version and I typed in the command into the terminal but got this message:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock – open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock – open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Could someone please tell me what is wrong and how to solve this? Cheers.

  13. At least to work with Firefox it seems the simpler and “right” thing to do instead was just:

    sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

  14. it’s working good with linux mint 13.00, you are a great freind

  15. i get this msg trying to enable the partners repository, cannot proceed from here.
“Enter the complete APT line of the repository that you want to add as source”

  16. This does not work on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bits: the installation goes fine, but then Firefox warns that it prevented the “outdated” flash plugin from running.

Following Ben’s suggestion, I typed sudo apt-get purge adobe-flash{plugin,-properties-gtk} && sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer. Now flash works fine on Firefox, and it’s a 64-bit version (as reported by file /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so).

Could the author please update this tutorial?

    Hi
Apparently there is a new update somewhere for Firefox. Somehow I cannot get it installed.
I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit. Can someone help with that?

    Thanks in advance.

  18. I can neither install flash 11.7 or google chrome. I need an alternative.

  19. I typed:

    sudo apt-get purge adobe-flash{plugin, -properties-gtk}

    The terminal returned

E: Command line option ‘p’ [from -properties-gtk}] is not known.

    sudo apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree

The above command worked for me very well and I could have all flash files opening properly Thanks to ou need to install the pepperflash, as adobe flash doesn’t work anymore with Chrome.

    sudo apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree

Note there is a typo in the package name provided by Papachan in the first comment.

  21. I open the terminal and type in but it ask: password for dave and won’t let me type in my password

    • For security, there’s no visual feedback when you typing password, just type in mind and hit Enter.

  22. Just used your steps man they worked a treat thanks alot

  23. Just one question, I hope it isn’t stupid. BUT, I’m getting set to go through this again with Flash (on 14.04 LTS 64bit), and it seems to me the 32-bit version was installed upon installation and I’d like to make sure it’s been removed completely prior to installing the 64-bit Flash. Will this command…:
    sudo apt-get purge adobe-flash{plugin,-properties-gtk}
… reliably purge this previous version???

    • That command didn’t do anything for me, but I only saw flashplugin-installer in my ‘dpkg -l’ list. I ran ‘apt-get purge flashplugin-installer’ to get rid of that.

  24. works for me. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Thanks Ji M !

  25. I’m on 14.04LTS 64 bit server, and none of the apt installation attempts worked for me, but here’s what did work:

    wget http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_20150921.1.orig.tar.gz

I unpackaged the file and went to the amd64 directory. Then I followed the readme.txt instructions for ‘using the plugin tar.gz’. I had to hunt a bit for the firefox plugins dir.

    sudo cp -p libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/
    sudo cp -r usr/* /usr

Restarted firefox and finally saw flash working.

    • Note that the url I mentioned above was what I saw ‘apt-get install flashplugin-installer’ trying to download.

  27. My Adobe Flash player problem was solved using Ji m’s plan. Thank you sir. Ubuntu needs to give you more recognition and cash.
