Install/Upgrade to NVIDIA 340.65 in Ubuntu 15.04 / 14.10 / 14.04

Nvidia 340.65

NVIDIA has announced the 340.65 release of its Linux graphics driver (long lived branch version) with latest Kernel (3.18) support and various bug fixes.

Here’s the release highlight for NVIDIA 340.65:

  • Added support for X.Org xserver ABI 19 (xorg-server 1.17).
  • Improved compatibility with recent Linux kernels.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented internal 4K panels on some laptops from being driven at a sufficient bandwidth to support their native resolutions.
  • Fixed a regression that prevented the NVIDIA kernel module from loading in some virtualized environments such as Amazon Web Services.
  • Fixed a regression that caused displays to be detected incorrectly on some notebook systems.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause X to freeze when using Base Mosaic.
  • Fixed a regression that prevented the NVIDIA X driver from recognizing Base Mosaic layouts generated by the nvidia-settings control panel.

Install / Upgrade NVIDIA Driver in Ubuntu:

If you’re running with NVIDIA’s proprietary driver in Ubuntu, you can upgrade to this driver release by following below steps:

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal. When it opens, run the command below to add the xorg-edgers fresh X crack PPA repository:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

Type in your user password when it asks.

2. After added the PPA, refresh your system cache via command:

sudo apt-get update

3. Finally install the 340.65 driver:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-340

The repository also provides the NVIDIA 343 driver (short lived branch version) and NVIDIA 346 driver (still in beta). If need, you can replace nvidia-340 in the previous code with nvidia-343 or nvidia-346 to install the driver.

      Thanks for the help! I just upgraded to Mint 17.1 and I received an update to NVIDIA 331.113. I’m not sure what it did to break OpenGL, but XBMC stopped working right afterward. This came out just in time!

      Hello! Excuse me for my stupid question, but I’m quite new to Ubuntu and Linux. I have installed it on my PC recently to test (14.04 trusty x64). But I removed my NV GTX 780 graphics card prior to installing and attached the monitor to the motherboard (build-in intel HD 4000 graphics adapter in CPU- core i7-3770K LGA1155 Ivy Bridge). I’ve installed some drivers for intel and OpenGL works fine now (at least for Left4Dead 2 Steam version). Do you think I’ll have any problems after mounting the GeForce back? What driver should I install for it and how? I’d prefer not the latest version, but the most stable one

      Hi, Tried this and it installed 340.65 and all was good until i rebooted
      When rebooted i just get black screen with cursor instead of login
      Am running fresh install of mint 17 with NVidia gt730 on dual-boot on AMD 64
      Any suggestions please

      I’m running kernel 3.18, after installing the driver 340 I don’t reach the login screen anymore. Instead I reach a black screen, I can’t see the cursor like hugh. Asus N550JK

        You can switch to the black & white text console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 on keyboard and login with your username and password, then remove this driver by:

        sudo apt-get remove nvidia-340

      You should mention that previous drivers need to be uninstalled first (sudo apt-get -purge nvidia*), otherwise a system conflict occurs, resulting in a blank screen after reboot.

      very helpful, thanks. a couple of notes:

      1) G is right; you need to uninstall current driver first, but in order to do that you need to first shut down X e.g. with sudo service lightdm stop
      2) minor corrections to G’s instructions: the purge command takes no hyphen.

      In summary, here are the steps I took:

      sudo service lightdm stop
      (open a terminal with F1)
      sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
      sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get install nvidia-340

      Hope this helps others as your fine post helped me.

      My system has two NVIDIA cards. When using nouveau driver, all displays (4x) work correctly except they are a little sluggish at times. When I install the NVIDIA driver (340), the second card is not recognized and I am unable to access the additional screens. I had to purge the install and resort back to nouveau. You would think the NVIDIA drivers would support any and all NVIDIA cards.

      Hi,,i have a HP mini,,i recently installed ubuntu 15.04, for some reason every time i play a video gets slow,,,,what i should do about that ? thanks in advance
