Darktable 2.0 Released, How to Install it in Ubuntu

Darktable 2.0

The Darktable Team finally announced the release of Darktable 2.0 today on Christmas Eve.

Darktable 2.0 has been ported to GTK+ 3. It features a new print mode, PDF exporting support, better HiDPI support, a new thumbnail cache, new image operations, new camera support, UI and scripting enhancements, and much more.

How to Install Darktable 2.0 in Ubuntu:

The new release has been made into universe (proposed) repository for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, so it can be installed directly from Software Center.

For Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and their derivatives, you can install the 2.0 release via the team member’s PPA:

[ac-box style=”tip”]At the moment, Darktable 2.0 is only available in the UNSTABLE PPA though the source is really the stable 2.0 tar.gz(I’ve checked the SHA256 checksums).

UPDATE: The 2.0 release has been made into the Stable PPA[/ac-box]

1. Add PPA

Open terminal from Unity Dash, App launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, paste below command and hit run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-release

Type in your password (no visual feedback just type in mind) when it asks, and hit Enter to continue.

2. Upgrade Darktable through Software Updater, or run below commands one by one in terminal to update the cache and install/upgrade the software:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install darktable

3. After installation, you may remove the PPA by launching Software & Updates -> Other Software tab. Or run below command in terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-unstable
