How to Install Inkscape 1.0 via PPA in Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04

Inkscape, open-source vector graphics editor, released new major version 1.0 a few days ago. Native Ubuntu .deb package now is available to install it in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.10, and Ubuntu 20.04.

Inkscape 1.0 release highlights include:

  • Theme support.
  • Better HiDPI Support.
  • Canvas rotation and mirroring
  • On-Canvas alignment of objects
  • Split view and X-Ray modes
  • New PowerPencil mode
  • New PNG export options
  • New Live Path Effect (LPE) selection dialog
  • Python 3 support for extensions.

How to Install Inkscape 1.0 in Ubuntu:

Besides the Snap and Flatpak (both runs in sandbox) packages, the official Inkscape PPA now contains the 1.0 packages for Ubuntu 18.04 and higher.

1. Open terminal either by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard or by searching for ‘terminal’ from system application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable

Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then upgrade inkscape from an old version via Software Updater:

or run command in terminal to check updates and install the editor:

sudo apt update

sudo apt install inkscape

Uninstall:

To remove the PPA repository, open Software & Updates and navigate to Other Software tab.

To remove Inkscape, either use Synaptic package manager or run command in terminal:

sudo apt remove --autoremove inkscape

  2. In Mint 20, I get this error:

    root@TXL3910750C:/home/redacted sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable
    LSB codename: ‘sh: 0: getcwd() failed: No such file or directory
    ulyana’.
    Version of base-files: ‘sh: 0: getcwd() failed: No such file or directory
    20.0.1’.
    Your LSB codename isn’t a valid Linux Mint codename.
    Please check your LSB information with “lsb_release -a”.
    root@TXL3910750C:/home/nm/Downloads/Gimp# lsb release -a
    bash: lsb: command not found

    Fix?

    Thanks for this but this command sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable only installs 0.92 and nothing will update it to 1.0

    Can you help please? Thanks!
