Ubuntu 26.04 Snapshot 4, the final snapshot release for the next LTS (Long Term Support), was released!
The Ubuntu developer team announced the release last night:
Hello everyone, I’d like to announce the fourth (and the final!) successful publication of the monthly snapshot – Resolute Snapshot 4. You can find the images on cdimage.ubuntu.com, for instance:
…
Ubuntu 26.04, code-name Resolute Raccoon, is the next long term support release with a total of 15 years support: 5-year standard support, 5-year ESM (via Ubuntu Pro), and 5-year more security coverage (for paid customers).
If everything goes well, Ubuntu 26.04 will feature Linux Kernel 7.0 and Gnome Desktop 50, though it’s so far powered by Kernel 6.19 and Gnome 50 Beta.
The Ubuntu Desktop introduced 2 new default applications: Showtime video player, and Resources system monitor and task manager. For unified software management, it’s however going to remove Software & Updates utility. See this page for details.
The LTS will also improve the Wayland session experience for NVIDIA users, add/remove encryption PIN/passphrase, and ability to re-encrypt disk after installation, support Ubuntu Pro for Ubuntu on WSL.
And, toolchain updated include glibc 2.42, LLVM 21, Rust 1.93.1, OpenJDK 25, and docker.io 29, runc 1.4.0, libvirt 12.0.0, QEMU 10.2.1, Mysql 8.4.8, Apache2 2.4.65, Nginx 1.28.2, and more.
Sadly for Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity users, the two official flavors missed the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS requalification. It will perhaps have Ubuntu MATE 26.04 and Ubuntu Unity 26.04 (auto-build), but they do NOT have the 3-year LTS support, due to lack of maintainers.
For more about Ubuntu 26.04, see the roadmap and the official release note page for details.
