I tried EasyBCD. The problem is that after launching EasyBCD (I’m using 2.3), its not clear what to do next. I see a button “add new entry” so I clicked that. I then must choose an operating system type from the dropdown and there is no selection for linux! Also it has a drive dropdown box specifying drive letters or something called “boot”. Since the drive I want to install to has no windows drive letter associated with it (but i do know the partition) then how do i select it with only drive letters?
I did see in Help-Documentation (Neosmart knowledge page) that there is a section explaining how to install Ubuntu but the operating system choices dont match what I see in version 2.3 and I have no idea if I have the latest. When I click on the download button on the neosmart website, it redirects me to a different webpage and tries to sell me the Easy Recovery Essentials tool starting at $19.95
So I’m giving up on trying to use EasyBCD and I’m not going to buy it if it does not support Linux installs as clearly 2.3 version does not do.

I installed Windows 7 on its own drive (an SSD) and I am installing Ubuntu on another drive with two partitions, one for Ubuntu and another for windows data. The windows data is NTFS file format and Ubuntu is Ext4 file format. While I can select the boot drive in bios, I prefer to have two menu entries which can select between windows or linux, defaulting to windows. You said “All the options are for using the same drive” so does that mean this EasyBCD only supports having all operating systems on the same drive? That’s dangerous and I wont do it ever.
Your first drive will be called sda and have it’s partitions as sda1,sda2…
your second drive will be sdb so if you want to use that, make a partition or use an existing one on sdb.
Using the advanced option on the installation allows the selection of other drives and partitioning of those file systems to be reformatted for other operating systems, in this scenario its ubuntu. After having found which partition you wish to create and/or use then you select and follow the rest of the steps in the tutorial above.

I had the same question and after some reading the installation documentation at Ubuntuhandbook.org, I found out that if Ubuntu is being installed on its own partition then use “/” as the mount point in the Ubuntu installer. I got the error “no root file system is defined, please correct from partioning menu” when I selected /boot.
I’m not sure when /boot is the correct choice. Hopefully the answer is there on Ubuntuhandbook.org

Nope. To be safe, I would recommend to select the last option, “Something Else”, when the Wizard asks you where to install Ubuntu. The partition table shows you which is the Windows partition. What you need to do is select the free space or delete a partition (highlight in table and click the minus sign), then create a Ext4 partition, mount point /
only dev/sda? That means Windows takes the whole hard drive. You have to partition the /dev/sda into /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, … /dev/sdaX so that you can select which partition to install Ubuntu

Try to use a key F12 during BIOS starting. I have it so:
If I press nothing, the only windows can be booted, BUT if I press the F12 key, it calls an Ubuntu boot loader and there I have a choice – either boot into the Ubuntu or boot into the Windows.
Without pressing F12 during BIOS starting, my PC is Windows only…. so my Ubuntu is a little hidden from the others… :-)
Just try F12 during BIOS starting and you will see, if it worx for u.

Hello Herald, What you want is very straight forwards. No.1 ubuntu is NOT like windows and therefore it doesnt name your primary hard disk drive C. No.2 To install 15.04 or 15.10 on your main hard disk you need to download a copy of Ubuntu from the Canonical website. You download the ISO image file for either 32bit or 64bit. Its a large file so it might take sometime to download. No.3 Once you have downloaded the ISO image file you next need to burn the ISO to a DVD disk. Once you have burnt the ISO to a disk, this should be a Live DVD meaning you can boot your computer with it and start the installation process. If you select the option to install Ubuntu it will step you through the installation process and its generally much quicker than windows too.

I was the same problem but i choose openconnect that do the same work. For install openconnect:
sudo apt-get install openconnect
for use it:
1) open a terminal windows
2) type sudo openconnect vpn.domain.com
3) keep terminal openned while you’re working
4) Ctrl+C in terminal when you’re finished
Don’t put / in primary partition if you want to add Windows later. Because if you want a shared NTFS partition and a System Reserved 100Mb then you will need the other three partitions.
Primary 1: 100Mb
Primary 2: Windows NTFS
Primary 3: Common shared partition NTFS
Primary 4: Extended for all your Ubuntu needs
Remember putting the swap in a logical partition still used up a primary partition, so now you have two primary partitions used.

This…saved my computer! Long story short, I unintentionally deleted my boot partition. Thought it was my bios. Wasn’t until your article that I realized I deleted my partition all in my own, by following some online instruction to remove something I can’t even remember now. Note to self: DON’T REMOVE ANYTHING!!!!
use live.server to install has a better partitioning than desktop, and see’s raid drive and save configuration. Then just install ubuntu-desktop, change netplan to NetworkManager done deal…

Indeed, and a list of the “mount point” choices would be good. /home and /var are good to have separately.
/etc is not a choice. Ubuntu typically requires 4-5GB and over 3.5GB of that is /usr.
Might also want to discuss LVM and when it is not a good idea. ext4 ext3 and even ext2 options.

Ubuntu supports the touch pad on many devices. It works on my Alienware laptop with Ubuntu 20.04, 20.10, & 21.04 .

To the OP, you might have to use a USB mouse until after it is installed. Depends on your make/model of computer.
