  1. Note that under “Device for boot loader installation”:

if you choose dev/sda, it’ll use Grub (Ubuntu’s boot loader) to load all systems on this hard drive.
If you choose dev/sda1 (the ext4 partition your created for Ubuntu), Ubuntu need to be manually added to drive’s boot loader after installation. (for example, you previously have Windows installed on another partition of this drive, you’ll need manually add Ubuntu into mbr)

how do i do that ? manually add the drive’s boot loader after installation ?

    • Use EasyBCD Free Edition, it’s a GUI tool for Windows user to manager bootloader. URL: neosmart.net/EasyBCD/#comparison

      • I tried EasyBCD. The problem is that after launching EasyBCD (I’m using 2.3), its not clear what to do next. I see a button “add new entry” so I clicked that. I then must choose an operating system type from the dropdown and there is no selection for linux! Also it has a drive dropdown box specifying drive letters or something called “boot”. Since the drive I want to install to has no windows drive letter associated with it (but i do know the partition) then how do i select it with only drive letters?
I did see in Help-Documentation (Neosmart knowledge page) that there is a section explaining how to install Ubuntu but the operating system choices dont match what I see in version 2.3 and I have no idea if I have the latest. When I click on the download button on the neosmart website, it redirects me to a different webpage and tries to sell me the Easy Recovery Essentials tool starting at $19.95

So I’m giving up on trying to use EasyBCD and I’m not going to buy it if it does not support Linux installs as clearly 2.3 version does not do.

Which “Use as ” to be selected in Editing partition for ext4 in something else?
Is Ext4 journaling file system ok?
and mount point is “/” selected for 40gb partition in dual boot with windows 7.
        is that correct?

  2. So all of these have you installing Ubuntu on the same physical drive as Win7 using a partition? How do I maintain having Win7 and all my other stuff installed on my 1TB Hard drive. Then install Ubuntu on my 250GB second drive? All the options are for using the same drive

    • Michael,

Your sentences and grammar are very bad English. I don’t understand what you are trying to say. I installed Windows 7 on its own drive (an SSD) and I am installing Ubuntu on another drive with two partitions, one for Ubuntu and another for windows data. The windows data is NTFS file format and Ubuntu is Ext4 file format. While I can select the boot drive in bios, I prefer to have two menu entries which can select between windows or linux, defaulting to windows. You said “All the options are for using the same drive” so does that mean this EasyBCD only supports having all operating systems on the same drive? That’s dangerous and I wont do it ever.

    • Your first drive will be called sda and have it’s partitions as sda1,sda2…
your second drive will be sdb so if you want to use that, make a partition or use an existing one on sdb.

    • Using the advanced option on the installation allows the selection of other drives and partitioning of those file systems to be reformatted for other operating systems, in this scenario its ubuntu. After having found which partition you wish to create and/or use then you select and follow the rest of the steps in the tutorial above.

  3. In a another forum, I see they have a partition which has mount point is /boot, can I install boot loader to that partion? Sorry for my bad English.

    • Your english is ok. Better than some of my fellow Americans born in USA.

I had the same question and after some reading the installation documentation at Ubuntuhandbook.org, I found out that if Ubuntu is being installed on its own partition then use “/” as the mount point in the Ubuntu installer. I got the error “no root file system is defined, please correct from partioning menu” when I selected /boot.

I’m not sure when /boot is the correct choice. Hopefully the answer is there on Ubuntuhandbook.org

I know that I’m replying to a four year old post so tmh has long ago figured it out but these questions come up again and again so hopefully somebody else can benefit.

      • Randall you are a prick.

        • Lol. It’s people like this that really mess people’s thoughts up on even installing a Linux OS, after being trapped in MS Windows for so long. Also, most people in the US have never really talked to people from other countries, and don’t realize there are other languages/cultures that are different from their own. It is truly the “World Wide Web” now more than ever.

  4. I have tried installing ubuntu from usb many times but it won’t work. When i am choosing country after “Erase all data and install ubuntu” the installer always crashes.
When it tried to send a bug message to devs, it says the problem cannot be reported: This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remive any third party package and try again.

    • So did you try the option “Something else” and manually create partition for Ubuntu installation?

    • Hi there…
I think its better that you possibly download a new version of ubuntu
      OR
      get that from other means.

Because I too had same problem while installing Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 alongside windows7 as well as installing via manually partioning.

If you can’t have them or download them, just click to AUTO UPDATE while just before installing begins, as it updates most of problems are solved [for me :-)]

  5. Previously it was ubuntu 14.04 ..but after installing gparted, everything was going wrong.not botted..so I want to install ubuntu 14.04 again.but,Every time it is showing error:-Input/output error during read on /dev/sda

after coming to the instalation page..pls help me..

  6. If i had drive C for the windows and D with free space. And i want to install ubuntu on the D, will my data and programs in the C get formatted?

    • Nope. To be safe, I would recommend to select the last option, “Something Else”, when the Wizard asks you where to install Ubuntu. The partition table shows you which is the Windows partition. What you need to do is select the free space or delete a partition (highlight in table and click the minus sign), then create a Ext4 partition, mount point /

      • Indeed, and a list of the “mount point” choices would be good. /home and /var are good to have separately.

/etc is not a choice. Ubuntu typically requires 4-5GB and over 3.5GB of that is /usr.

Might also want to discuss LVM and when it is not a good idea. ext4 ext3 and even ext2 options.

  7. I have windows 7 and when i install ubuntu so show one partition dev/sda only instead of three partition.

    • only dev/sda? That means Windows takes the whole hard drive. You have to partition the /dev/sda into /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, … /dev/sdaX so that you can select which partition to install Ubuntu

      • how many partition should i make? i’ve shrink my win7 partition, made 2 partition. 1 for swap, and one Ext4 partition with mount point / . i’ve set Device for boot loader installation at /dev/sda/. but when i restart, it will only boot win7. at the windows boot selection, only windows7 can be selected, no option to select ubuntu… grub2 didn’t appear.. my BIOS has already been set to UEFI..

        • Try to use a key F12 during BIOS starting. I have it so:
If I press nothing, the only windows can be booted, BUT if I press the F12 key, it calls an Ubuntu boot loader and there I have a choice – either boot into the Ubuntu or boot into the Windows.
Without pressing F12 during BIOS starting, my PC is Windows only…. so my Ubuntu is a little hidden from the others… :-)
Just try F12 during BIOS starting and you will see, if it worx for u.
          Good luck.

  8. Hi,

I have already installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS without partion with a bootable dvd. Now how do I create partion? Currently there is no partion. I have the bootable dvd with me. My laptop hardware = 2 GB RAM, 64 BIT, 500 GB Hard Disc. There is no other OS installed. Mine is single OS PC.

  11. Hello There,

i want to install ubuntu15.04 in my C drive rather than any other drive . i dnt want windows i only want ubuntu in my C Drive . Kindly help me.
    sorry for my bad english

    Thanks in advance.

    • Hello Herald, What you want is very straight forwards. No.1 ubuntu is NOT like windows and therefore it doesnt name your primary hard disk drive C. No.2 To install 15.04 or 15.10 on your main hard disk you need to download a copy of Ubuntu from the Canonical website. You download the ISO image file for either 32bit or 64bit. Its a large file so it might take sometime to download. No.3 Once you have downloaded the ISO image file you next need to burn the ISO to a DVD disk. Once you have burnt the ISO to a disk, this should be a Live DVD meaning you can boot your computer with it and start the installation process. If you select the option to install Ubuntu it will step you through the installation process and its generally much quicker than windows too.
      Hope this helps? Regards cyteck

  16. Don’t put / in primary partition if you want to add Windows later. Because if you want a shared NTFS partition and a System Reserved 100Mb then you will need the other three partitions.
    Primary 1: 100Mb
    Primary 2: Windows NTFS
Primary 3: Common shared partition NTFS
Primary 4: Extended for all your Ubuntu needs

Remember putting the swap in a logical partition still used up a primary partition, so now you have two primary partitions used.

How is your Dutch or Swahili?

  19. Hi ,
i just want to ask how i can possibly instal ubuntu ?
I reached to the stage of installation already but i cannot access my touch pad to click the installation.
I hope someone can help me out

    • ubuntu does not support touch pad instead use mouse and keyboard

      • Ubuntu supports the touch pad on many devices. It works on my Alienware laptop with Ubuntu 20.04, 20.10, & 21.04 .

Hi, Louis. I’ve been having trouble dual-booting Ubuntu 21.04 on my Lenovo ThinkPad. It all goes well until after the final precursory step when installation begins proper and the OS files start being copied. It gets to a point and stops, and talks about a certain error. What was the step-by-step path you took to install yours?

    • To the OP, you might have to use a USB mouse until after it is installed. Depends on your make/model of computer.

This…saved my computer! Long story short, I unintentionally deleted my boot partition. Thought it was my bios. Wasn’t until your article that I realized I deleted my partition all in my own, by following some online instruction to remove something I can’t even remember now. Note to self: DON’T REMOVE ANYTHING!!!!

  21. use live.server to install has a better partitioning than desktop, and see’s raid drive and save configuration. Then just install ubuntu-desktop, change netplan to NetworkManager done deal…

  22. great.
    if possible please suggest me
how to build gem5 on ubuntu 21.04. please help me
