Ubuntu 24.10, code-name “Oracular Oriole”, was officially released!
This is the latest short term release with 9 months support until July 2025. It features Linux Kernel 6.11 and GNOME Desktop 47.
And, there are official flavors feature other desktop environments, such as KUbuntu 24.10 and Ubuntu Studio 24.10 with KDE Plasma 6.1, XUbuntu 24.10 with XFCE 4.18, Ubuntu MATE 24.10 with 1.26.
The Beta release of Ubuntu 24.10, code-name Oracular Oriole, is out last night on Sep 20.
This is a short-term release with 9 months support. It so far features Linux Kernel 6.11 and GNOME 47 desktop.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the new release includes a “Warty Brown” accent color and new optional wallpapers in the “Appearances” settings page. There’s also an anniversary logo that you can see in the login screen.
And, the release now by default plays the original startup sound at login. While, there’s a toggle option in “Sound” settings page to turn it off.
The sound comes from the warty-startup.oga file under “/usr/share/sounds/Yaru/stereo” directory. Without logging out and back in, you may run command below in terminal to play it out:
Ubuntu 24.10, code-name Oracular Oriole, is coming in next month. Now, the default as well as optional wallpapers are out!
As before, the default wallpaper for Ubuntu 24.10 is made up of mascot (a songbird this time) in center and gradient background. The file is always named “warty-final-ubuntu.png”, and features 4K (3840×2160) resolution.

Wallpaper Contest for the upcoming Ubuntu 24.10, Oracular Oriole, is open, accept artwork for the 20th anniversary!
Like the last wallpaper contest, the artwork submissions are separated into 4 categories. Each category will have 2 winners, and finally 8 mixed images will be included in the Ubuntu 24.10 disc image as optional wallpapers.
With Ubuntu 24.10, Ubuntu is reaching the 20th anniversary. So, this time the contest includes a category that’s specially for the two decade anniversary of Ubuntu. While 3 others are Mascot Theme, Digital / Abstract, and Photography.
GNOME 47, the next release of the popular Linux Desktop environment, is in alpha stage now!
GNOME 47, which is scheduled to be released on Sep 14, 2024, will be the default desktop for next Ubuntu 24.10 and Fedora Workstation 41 if everything goes well.
The first alpha development release was out a few days ago. Which, introduced accent color support!
Ubuntu since 22.04 already has the feature out-of-the-box. Under “Appearance” settings page, there are some big dots with different colors under “Style” section. They are called accent colors. Choose one from there will apply the color to all toggle switches, check-boxes, slider-bars, selection borders, etc in the desktop.
