KUbuntu 26.04, the official Ubuntu 26.04 flavor features KDE Plasma desktop, as expected will be a LTS with 3-year support circle.

As you may know, Ubuntu Technical Board announced the LTS qualifications for Resolute Raccoon in last December, excluded Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity as they missed the deadline of the LTS qualification.

GNOME 50, the default desktop for next Ubuntu 26.04 and Fedora Workstation 44, is now in RC stage.

This release candidate is the last feature complete development version, while, the final release is planned for March 18th in next few weeks.

Just a few days after the wallpaper competition, Ubuntu Artwork team updated the wallpapers package (through proposed repository) for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, revealing the default wallpapers.

As previous releases, the new default wallpaper is a purple background with mascot (raccoon this time) in center. Instead of using straight origami lines, the new wallpaper uses curved-crease origami in background which looks great.

GNOME 50, the default desktop environment for Ubuntu 26.04 and Fedora 44 Workstation, now is available for Beta testing, while the final release is planned for March 18th, 2026.

The last Alpha introduced first day of a week setting option which can be configured by gsettings command. This Beta improved the feature by adding an option in Gnome Control Center (aka Settings) -> System -> Date & Time, allowing to configure it graphically.

Wallpaper Competition for Ubuntu 26.04, Resolute Raccoon, opened for submissions. 6 of them will be included in the disc images.

This is one of my top favorite community activities. I’m neither an expert artist nor a professional photographer, but I can get many cool images and vote my favorites to be optional wallpapers for all Ubuntu users.

Ubuntu Team announced the second development release of Ubuntu 26.04, Resolute Snapshot 2, yesterday afternoon (UTC time).

The date was moved up by a week, because of end-of-year (EOY) shutdown and the developers need more time to fix issues before holidays.

Whilst the snapshot was planned for next week, we wanted to do it a week earlier so as to give ourselves some time to fix anything that might break ahead of the EOY shutdown from w/c December 22nd.

For users of Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity, the 2 Linux Distributions will NOT be the Long Term Support (LTS) release for the next 26.04. 

Ubuntu announced the LTS qualifications for Resolute Raccoon in last week:

We haven’t seen LTS requalification requests from Ubuntu MATE nor Ubuntu Unity, so these will release subject to release team approval, and they will be non-LTS.
