At the moment of writing this article, the alpha release is available to upgrade in Saucy&#8217;s updater for testing purpose. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:red;\">Important:<\/span> Production machines please wait until the Ubuntu 14.04 final is released. By then, we can follow below steps to upgrade our systems.<\/p>\n<p><b>Before starting any upgrades, you need to:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup important files, documents, bookmarks and other data.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;ve manually installed proprietary drivers directly from the manufacturer&#8217;s website, then before upgrading I recommend removing these drivers first and reverting to the open-source drivers<\/li>\n<li>Open <b>Software &#038; Updates<\/b> utility from Unity Dash. Disable all third-party repositories under <b>Other Software<\/b> tab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Desktop Upgrade:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Press <u>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/u> on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to update your system:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade<\/pre>\n<p>Now start the updater via -d option:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo update-manager -d<\/pre>\n<p>The Software Updater will open and tell you your system is up to date and a new release Ubuntu 14.04 is available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/upgradeto-ubuntu14.04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/upgradeto-ubuntu14.04.png\" alt=\"upgrade from Ubuntu 13.10 to Ubuntu 14.04\" width=\"488\" height=\"182\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2893\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/upgradeto-ubuntu14.04.png 488w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/upgradeto-ubuntu14.04-300x111.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on the <b>Upgrade<\/b> button and confirm again in next window. Software Updater will fetch and install the files and prompt you to remove unnecessary applications. <\/p>\n<p>Finally you&#8217;ll be asked to restart your computer to finish the upgrade. That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Upgrade Ubuntu Server:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: Please backup your configuration files if you&#8217;re running any services on Ubuntu server.<\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu Server edition, we need to install the update-manager-core first by executing the command below:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get install update-manager-core<\/pre>\n<p>Then edit the config file:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo vi \/etc\/update-manager\/release-upgrades<\/pre>\n<p>Make sure there&#8217;s a line that says &#8220;Prompt=normal&#8221; or &#8220;Prompt=lts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Start the upgrade process by:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo do-release-upgrade -d<\/pre>\n<p>Follow the on-screen prompts and you\u2019re done!.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This simple tutorial shows how to upgrade your system from Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy to Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr for both Desktop and Server editions.
