It does this by making disk write activity &#8220;bursty&#8221;, so that only reads of uncached data result in a disk spinup. It causes a significant improvement in battery life (for usage patterns that allow it).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/samwel.tk\/laptop_mode\/\" title=\"Laptop Mode Tools website\" target=\"_blank\">Laptop Mode Tools<\/a> is the primary way to <b>enable the Laptop Mode feature<\/b> of the Linux kernel, which lets your hard drive spin down. In addition, it allows you to tweak a number of other power-related settings using a simple configuration file.<\/p>\n<p>Laptop Mode Tools was a command line only tool until version 1.64, which introduces a GUI that lets you toggle individual power saving modules.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Laptop-Mode-Tools.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Laptop-Mode-Tools.jpg\" alt=\"Laptop Mode Tools in Ubuntu\" width=\"580\" height=\"404\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Laptop-Mode-Tools.jpg 580w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Laptop-Mode-Tools-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the moment the version 1.64 is only available in the Ubuntu 14.04 repository. For Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 12.04, you can install it from the Webupd8 PPA.<\/p>\n<p><b>Install Laptop Mode Tools:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: <i>Laptop Mode Tools is in conflict with TLP. Don&#8217;t use them in the same time!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu 14.04, search for and install <b>laptop-mode-tools<\/b> from Ubuntu Software Center.<\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.04, press <u>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/u> on your keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below one by one:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team\/unstable\n\nsudo apt-get update\n\nsudo apt-get install laptop-mode-tools<\/pre>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t like the PPAs, you can manually download the deb from <a href=\"http:\/\/ppa.launchpad.net\/webupd8team\/unstable\/ubuntu\/pool\/main\/l\/laptop-mode-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once installed, the Laptop Mode should be enabled by default.
