It&#8217;ll work on Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 12.04 and future Ubuntu releases if Unity still to be the default desktop environment.<\/p>\n<p>In Unity Desktop, application launchers are actually files stored in your computer, with a <b>&#8216;.desktop&#8217;<\/b> extension. So besides changing the icon theme, you can <b>edit the &#8216;.desktop&#8217; to change the launcher icon for an specific application<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the steps to change the application icon, Firefox Web browser as example, in Ubuntu 13.10 Unity:<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Edit the <b>&#8216;firefox.desktop&#8217;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;.desktop&#8217; files are usually stored in &#8220;\/usr\/share\/applications\/&#8221;. For some applications that are installed in user&#8217;s directory, you may find the .desktop files in &#8220;~\/.local\/share\/applications\/&#8221; directory.<\/p>\n<p>To edit the firefox.desktop, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">cd \/usr\/share\/applications\n\nsudo gedit firefox.desktop<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/edit-firefox-file.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/edit-firefox-file.jpg\" alt=\"edit firefox.desktop\" width=\"560\" height=\"71\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/edit-firefox-file.jpg 560w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/edit-firefox-file-300x38.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It will navigate to \/usr\/share\/applications\/ directory and open the <i>firefox.desktop<\/i> file via gedit editor. You can run <code>ls |more<\/code> to list all available files in that directory.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Change the value of <b>Icon<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In gedit window, scroll down to find out the line that starts with &#8220;Icon=&#8221; and change its value to the exact path to your NEW icon file.
