Install Samba and the graphical configuration tool:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, paste the command below and hit run:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get install samba samba-common system-config-samba python-glade2 gksu<\/pre>\n<p><b>2. Open Unity Dash, search for and open the samba configuration tool:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/samba-configuration-tool.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/samba-configuration-tool.png\" alt=\"samba graphical configuration tool\" width=\"480\" height=\"240\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/samba-configuration-tool.png 480w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/samba-configuration-tool-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> When the tool opens, go to <b>Preferences -> Server Settings<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>Under <b>Basic<\/b> tab:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Workgroup<\/b>. Same to your Windows Workgroup name (case-sensitive). In Windows 7, right-click <b>Computer<\/b> icon and go to <b>Properties<\/b>, there you&#8217;ll see Windows Workgroup name.<\/li>\n<li><b>Description<\/b>.This is the name of your computer as seen by Windows Users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As it is not advisable to allow \u2018Guests\u2019 there should be no reason to change the \u2018security\u2019 settings tab unless you wish to do so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-server-settings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-server-settings.png\" alt=\"Samba Server Settings\" width=\"580\" height=\"341\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-server-settings.png 580w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-server-settings-300x176.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally click the <b>OK<\/b> button to save it.<\/p>\n<p><b>(Optional) 4. Create a special user for network file sharing<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Go to <b>System Settings<\/b> -> <b>User Accounts<\/b> -> Click <b>unlock<\/b> -> Click <b>+<\/b> (plus) icon -> Choose <b>Standard<\/b> account and type in names.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/add-user.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/add-user.png\" alt=\"add-user\" width=\"580\" height=\"288\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/add-user.png 580w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/add-user-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Remember to set a password to enable the new account.<\/p>\n<p><b>5.<\/b> Next go to <b>Preferences -> Samba Users<\/b>. Click <b>Add User<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Unix Username<\/b>: Select a user on this Ubuntu machine. You&#8217;ll access the shares from Windows machine with this user privilege. <b>You can create a special user for file sharing by step 4<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Windows Username<\/b>: When accessing from Windows machine, you&#8217;ll be asked to type this username and the password below.<\/li>\n<li><b>Samba password<\/b>: When accessing from Windows machine, you&#8217;ll be asked to type the username above and this password.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm Samba password.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-user-settings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-user-settings.png\" alt=\"Samba User Settings\" width=\"580\" height=\"341\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-user-settings.png 580w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Samba-user-settings-300x176.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, restart Samba service and done!<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo restart smbd && sudo restart nmbd<\/pre>\n<p>To share a folder, click the green <b>+<\/b> (plus) button in Samba Server Configuration tool and you can then easily set the directory, name, read\/write permissions and access users.<\/p>\n<p><u>Tips:<\/u> If you set the <b>Unix Username<\/b> to current login user in <b>step 5<\/b>, you can easily share a folder by &#8220;Local Network Share&#8221; option in its context menu.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This tutorial will show you how to install and configure Samba, a free software that allows you to share files, printers and other common resources across a network, in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr. 1.
