And here are some big changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>AV1 Codec<\/b> support.<\/li>\n<li>New color for subtitles and ability to change opacity.<\/li>\n<li>static HDR10 and dynamic Dolby Vision HDR support.<\/li>\n<li>Move to <b>Python 3 for addons<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>New functions in the PVR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/kodi-matrix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33391\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>How to Install Kodi 19.0 via PPA:<\/h3>\n<p>Open terminal either from system app launcher or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run following commands one by one to get the new release packages.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Add Kodi PPA.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To add the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~team-xbmc\/+archive\/ubuntu\/ppa\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official Kodi PPA<\/a>, run command in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc\/ppa<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password when it asks, with no asterisk feedback, and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/kodi-ppa-focal.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"150\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33389\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Install \/ Update Kodi.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The <b>Software Updater<\/b> utility will prompt you to run a &#8220;partial upgrade&#8221; since the dependency packages switched from Python 2 to Python 3. So it&#8217;s recommended to install or upgrade Kodi by running terminal commands.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly refresh system package cache, if you&#8217;re on Ubuntu 18.04, via command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:None;\">sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>Then install Kodi via command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:None;\">sudo apt install kodi<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/apt-kodi19.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"408\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33390\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to upgrade Kodi, the previous command may not update the add-ons, so I recommend to run <code style=\"border:none;\">apt upgrade<\/code> instead:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:None;\">sudo apt upgrade<\/pre>\n<h3>How to Downgrade:<\/h3>\n<p>You can purge the Ubuntu PPA as well as downgrade Kodi to the stock version available in Ubuntu main repositories.
