For Ubuntu 20.10 users, here&#8217;s how to upgrade your system to the new edition.<\/p>\n<p>Same to the previous version, <a href=\"https:\/\/fridge.ubuntu.com\/2021\/04\/22\/ubuntu-21-04-hirsute-hippo-released\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu 21.04<\/a> is a short term release with 9 month support. It&#8217;s powered by Linux <b>Kernel 5.11<\/b> with following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft Active Directory integration<\/li>\n<li>Use wayland as default session, while Xorg is still available.<\/li>\n<li>Dark Gnome Shell Theme by default.<\/li>\n<li>Use Desktop Icons NG extension for drag &#038; drop support.<\/li>\n<li>Use nftables as default firewall backend.<\/li>\n<li>Add support for smartcard authentication<\/li>\n<li>Toolchain and core application updates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Upgrade Ubuntu 20.10 to Ubuntu 21.04:<\/h3>\n<p><b>1.)<\/b> First of all, make backup of all your important data.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.)<\/b> Then disable or remove Ubuntu PPAs, or third-party repositories. To do so, open <b>Software &#038; Updates<\/b> utility and go to <i>Other Software<\/i> tab.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/remove-ppas-repos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"290\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33622\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.)<\/b> Next navigate to <b>Updates<\/b> tab, make sure the value of &#8220;Notify me a new Ubuntu version&#8221; is set to &#8220;<b>For any new version<\/b>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/notify-anyubuntu.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"290\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33623\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>4.)<\/b> If proprietary drivers are in use, it&#8217;s recommended to switch to the open-source drivers under <b>Additional Drivers<\/b> tab.<\/p>\n<p><b>5.)<\/b> Press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal, and run command to install all system updates:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/apt-upgrade-groovy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"187\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33624\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>6.)<\/b> Restart your machine, then open terminal and run command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">update-manager -d<\/pre>\n<p>The Software Updater will pop-up and prompt you that Ubuntu 21.04 is available. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/updatemanager-groovy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"370\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33625\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>7.)<\/b> Click on &#8220;Upgrade&#8221; button and confirm after reading the release note dialog. <\/p>\n<p>NOTE: though the release note says Hirsute Hippo development branch. It did upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04 final edition in my test.<\/p>\n<p>After that, it starts downloading the release upgrade tool:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/download-upgrade-tool.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"280\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33626\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>8.)<\/b> Finally, you&#8217;re at the system upgrade wizard:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/upgrade-ubuntu2104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"303\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33627\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before &#8220;<b>Getting new packages<\/b>&#8220;, it will again ask for confirmation. And your WON&#8217;T be able to cancel the upgrading process once you click on &#8220;Start Upgrade&#8221; button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/start-upgrade.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"440\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33628\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>9.)<\/b> Depends on network speed and system resources, the upgrading process can even take a few hours. However, there will be one or two confirm dialog during the process. So <b>DON&#8217;T leave your machine too far<\/b>, you have to keep an eye on it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/remove-obsolete.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"447\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33629\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When everything&#8217;s done successfully, it will prompt to restart the machine to complete the process.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/restart2complete.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"377\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33630\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.
