It&#8217;s easy to get it back in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04 and higher.<\/p>\n<p><b>LightDM<\/b>, <i>stands for Light Display Manager<\/i>, is a free open-source project by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu. Ubuntu up to version 16.04 LTS uses it as the default display manager. When it opens, paste the command below and hit enter:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install lightdm unity-greeter<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apt-lightdm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apt-lightdm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"277\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apt-lightdm.png 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apt-lightdm-300x139.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the installing process, it will prompt to configure the display manager. Just hit Enter on the screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/configure-lightdm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/configure-lightdm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/configure-lightdm.png 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/configure-lightdm-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the next screen, use up\/down arrow key to choose &#8220;lightdm&#8221; and hit Enter to apply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/select-lightdm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/select-lightdm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/select-lightdm.png 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/select-lightdm-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once installed, restart your computer and you&#8217;ll see the new login screen!<\/p>\n<h3>Configure LightDM login screen:<\/h3>\n<p>Uses are mostly want to remove the white dots and change the login background wallpaper. <\/p>\n<p>To do so, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to install <i>dconf-editor<\/i> if you don&#8217;t have it:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install dconf-editor<\/pre>\n<p>Next, run command to grant <code>lightdm<\/code> user privilege to access control list:<\/p>\n<pre>xhost +SI:localuser:lightdm<\/pre>\n<p>Finally <b><i>launch dconf editor via lightdm<\/i><\/b>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo -u lightdm dconf-editor<\/pre>\n<p>When it opens, navigate to &#8220;<i>com\/canonical\/unity-greeter<\/i>&#8220;. Firstly, open terminal and run command to disable LightDM:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo systemctl disable lightdm.service<\/pre>\n<p>Then launch the configure screen by running the command below:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm<\/pre>\n<p>This time choose &#8216;gdm3&#8217; to handle the login screen and hit Enter.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, remove lightdm as well as its dependency packages via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove lightdm unity-greeter<\/pre>\n<p>That&#8217;s all.
