By releasing v21.8.0, it finally adds  macOS support officially. It uses <b>MPV<\/b> and\/or <b>MPlayer<\/b> multimedia engine, so it can play virtually all video and audio formats.<\/p>\n<p>The player <b><i>remembers the settings of all files you play<\/i><\/b>, so when you open an unfinished movie it will be resumed at the same point you left it, as well as the same settings. It also has built-in <b><i>YouTube browser<\/i><\/b>, allows to search for and click to play YouTube video directly in the media player.<\/p>\n<p>I always keep SMPlayer in my system as an alternative media player, because it has some useful features that I need. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ability to fetch subtitles from internet.<\/li>\n<li>cast to smart phone and chromecast.<\/li>\n<li>rotate video and change aspect ratio while playback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/smplayer-feature.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/smplayer-feature-600x325.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"325\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-34398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/smplayer-feature-600x325.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/smplayer-feature-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/smplayer-feature-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/smplayer-feature.jpg 1233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s New in SMPlayer 21.8.0<\/h3>\n<p>Besides the macOS package, Linux Appimage, Flatpak, and Snap support, the release also include following changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better automatic resizing of the main window, trying to prevent black borders.<\/li>\n<li>Add option to rotate the video by 180 degrees.<\/li>\n<li>Add some predefined speeds (0.25x, 0.5x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x).<\/li>\n<li>Prevent a one second delay when using play prev\/next.<\/li>\n<li>The installation of YouTube support is now optional on Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Disable power saving on Linux Wayland during playback.<\/li>\n<li>And some bug-fixes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Get SMPlayer:<\/h3>\n<p>The media player now is available at Github. All the binary packages as well as source tarball are available to download at the link below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/smplayer-dev\/smplayer\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download SMPlayer<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For Linux, since Appimage is a non-install executable, Flatpak and Snap are universal package formats need separate daemons to run in sandbox, native <code>.deb<\/code> \/ <code>.rpm<\/code> package may still be preferred.<\/p>\n<p>To install and keep SMPlayer native packages up-to-date, you can either use the <a href=\"https:\/\/software.opensuse.org\/download.html?project=home%3Asmplayerdev&#038;package=smplayer\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official OBS repository<\/a> for <b>Arch Linux<\/b>, <b>Debian<\/b>, <b>Fedora<\/b>, <b>openSUSE<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Or use the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~rvm\/+archive\/ubuntu\/smplayer\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official Ubuntu PPA<\/a> for all current <b>Ubuntu<\/b> releases, <b>Linux Mint<\/b>, and derivatives.<\/p>\n<p>1. Add Ubuntu PPA.<\/p>\n<p>Open terminal either from start menu (click top-left &#8216;Activities&#8217;, search for and open terminal), or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm\/smplayer<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password, no asterisk feedback, and hit Enter to continue.
