For testing purpose, GIMP 2.99.18 was released as the latest development version. It provides the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/downloads\/devel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official Linux package<\/a> via Flatpak package. However, some users don&#8217;t like it, since Flatpak is an universal package format needs separate daemon to run in sandbox.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45625\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-700x387.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-700x387.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-300x166.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-768x425.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-1320x730.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918.webp 1466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Install GIMP 3.0 Dev from PPA in Ubuntu 20.04\/22.04:<\/h3>\n<p>For Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, and derivatives, e.g, Linux Mint 20\/21 and Zorin OS 17, the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~mati75\/+archive\/ubuntu\/gimp30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> contains the classic <i>.deb<\/i> package for GIMP 3.0 Dev release.<\/p>\n<p><i>NOTE: The package in the PPA is unstable. It may have bugs and used only for testing purpose. Installing GIMP from this PPA will override the 2.10 stable release, don&#8217;t install it on production machine.<\/i><\/p>\n<h4>1. Add the PPA.<\/h4>\n<p>Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal, or search for and open terminal from start menu if you&#8217;re on Linux Mint or ZorinOS.<\/p>\n<p>When terminal opens, copy and paste the command below and hit Run to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mati75\/gimp30<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type your password as <code>sudo<\/code> command need user authentication, and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gimp-3-betappa.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34564\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gimp-3-betappa.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gimp-3-betappa.png 594w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gimp-3-betappa-300x85.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>2. Update package cache<\/h4>\n<p>Since Ubuntu 20.04, it updates the system package cache automatically while adding Ubuntu PPAs, However, Linux Mint 20 does not. So you may need to manually run command in terminal to update cache:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<h4>3. Install \/ Upgrade to GIMP 3.0 Dev<\/h4>\n<p>Finally, you can either open Software Updater (Update Manager) to install or upgrade the GIMP package, or run command in terminal instead:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install gimp gegl<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/apt-gimp3-beta.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34565\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/apt-gimp3-beta.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/apt-gimp3-beta.png 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/apt-gimp3-beta-300x154.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Revert to GIMP 2.10 Stable:<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible to downgrade the image editor back to 2.10 stable release, 2.10.18 if no other relevant PPA added.<\/p>\n<p>Simply open terminal and run the command below to install the <code>ppa-purge<\/code> package, and then purge the Ubuntu PPA which will remove it as well as downgrade installed packages:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ppa-purge &amp;&amp; sudo ppa-purge ppa:mati75\/gimp30<\/pre>\n<p>That&#8217;s all.
