Every time when I shutdown or reboot the machine, it stuck at blank screen with text message &#8220;<i><b>systemd-shutdown[1]: waiting for process: crond<\/b><\/i>&#8221; for more than a minute.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/crond.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/crond-600x310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-35968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/crond-600x310.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/crond-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/crond-768x396.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/crond.jpg 783w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the keyword &#8216;<b>crond<\/b>&#8216;, it has something to do with the cron schedule job. And, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/unix.stackexchange.com\/questions\/590510\/kubuntu-20-04-shutdown-reboot-hangs-at-waiting-for-process-crond\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this thread<\/a>, user may run the command below to list all current schedule cron jobs:<\/p>\n<pre>find \/etc\/cron* -type f | xargs  ls -ltr<\/pre>\n<p>And there you&#8217;ll find that the schedule job &#8216;<b>\/etc\/cron.d\/collect<\/b>&#8216; tries to run an unknown <b>crond<\/b> binary under &#8216;\/var\/tmp&#8217; every 10th minute (e.g., 5:10, 5:20, 5:30 &#8230;). So the problem may not occur when shutdown\/reboot within a few minutes after login. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cron-collect.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cron-collect-600x359.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-35971\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cron-collect-600x359.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cron-collect-300x179.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cron-collect.webp 741w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \/var\/tmp directory stores temporary files or folders that are preserved between system reboots. According to @bird7676 in that thread, the files were probably created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedownloadmanager.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Free Download Manager<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h3>Solution:<\/h3>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t use and have removed the Free Download Manager, simply remove these temporary files as well as the schedule job. <\/p>\n<p>To do so, either use a system cleaner (e.g., BleachBit), or press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal and run command below to remove the files:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo rm \/etc\/cron.d\/collect \/var\/tmp\/crond \/var\/tmp\/bs<\/pre>\n<p>If the app is important for you, you may run &#8216;<code>mv<\/code>&#8216; command to move the files to another location or backup unfinished downloads before deleting them.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: while the binary may be still running though you have removed the file, you may need to shutdown\/reboot twice to check if the problem is fixed.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My Ubuntu laptop recently runs into a power-off issue.
