Here&#8217;s an extension to do the job for Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 21.10, and Debian 11 with GNOME desktop.<\/p>\n<p>You know, many Linux desktops (e.g., <i>KDE Plasma<\/i> and <i>Cinnamon<\/i>) display the icon\/figure of user account in the system start menu. <\/p>\n<p>GNOME however does not have the classic style &#8216;start menu&#8217; by default. Instead, user may add the avatar icon into upper-right corner system tray drop-down menu (aka system menu).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gnome-display-avatar.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gnome-display-avatar-600x416.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"416\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-37417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gnome-display-avatar-600x416.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gnome-display-avatar-300x208.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gnome-display-avatar.webp 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Install Avatar Extension:<\/h3>\n<p>The function is implemented by a small extension called &#8216;<i>Big Avatar<\/i>&#8216;. It so far supports GNOME version from v3.36 to 40. <\/p>\n<h4>1. Install &#8216;chrome-gnome-shell&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p>Firstly, make sure you have installed the <code>chrome-gnome-shell<\/code> package, which is required for installing Gnome Extensions in Ubuntu from web browser.<\/p>\n<p>To install it as well as extension management tool, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal. Then, run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install chrome-gnome-shell gnome-shell-extension-prefs<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/apt-chromegnome-impish.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/apt-chromegnome-impish.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/apt-chromegnome-impish.png 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/apt-chromegnome-impish-300x113.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>2. Install Big Avatar Extension:<\/h4>\n<p><b>NOTE:<\/b> Firefox as Snap (pre-installed in Ubuntu 21.10) so far (Feb, 2022) does not support for installing Gnome Extensions! Configure Avatar icon size:<\/h4>\n<p>The icon should appear immediately after installation. However, the icon size is NOT looking good.<\/p>\n<p>To adjust it, search for and open &#8216;<b>Gnome Extensions<\/b>&#8216; app from <i>Activities<\/i> overview screen.
