And, a black background will consume significantly less power especially for AMOLED displays.<\/p>\n<p>If you already downloaded a solid color wallpaper from web, or created one via an image editor, simply click the &#8220;<b>Add Picture<\/b>&#8221; button in <i>system settings -&gt; Background (or Appearance)<\/i>. Not only for <i>Ubuntu<\/i>, it also works on <i>Fedora<\/i>, <i>Debian<\/i>, <i>Manjaro<\/i>, and other Linux with <strong>GNOME<\/strong> Desktop.<\/p>\n<p>1. Firstly, search for and install &#8220;Dconf Editor&#8221; configuration tool from either Ubuntu Software or App Center:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/install-dconfeditor-appcenter.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46152\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/install-dconfeditor-appcenter-700x417.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/install-dconfeditor-appcenter-700x417.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/install-dconfeditor-appcenter-300x179.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/install-dconfeditor-appcenter-768x458.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/install-dconfeditor-appcenter.webp 1106w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard, and run the command below in pop-up terminal to install the tool:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install dconf-editor<\/pre>\n<p>2. Once installed, either press <i>Windows<\/i> (<i>Super<\/i>) key on keyboard or click the top-left corner &#8220;Activities&#8221;, then search for and open &#8216;Dconf Editor&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38033\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/launch-dconfeditor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/launch-dconfeditor.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/launch-dconfeditor-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. When the tool opens, navigate to &#8216;<i>org\/gnome\/desktop\/background<\/i>&#8216; page. There you need to do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Clear the value of &#8216;<i>picture-uri<\/i>&#8216; and &#8216;<i>picture-uri-dark<\/i>&#8216;<\/b> to disable current wallpapers for both light and dark mode. Click them one by one, disable &#8220;use default value&#8221;, and set empty content for custom value.<\/li>\n<li>Set &#8216;color-shading-type&#8217; to &#8216;solid&#8217; (usually default).<\/li>\n<li><b>Change value of &#8216;primary-color&#8217;<\/b> to display as background. (<code>#000000<\/code> for dark, <code>#ffffff<\/code> for white. Or use color picker tool to get other color value)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For choice, you may set gradient color background, by setting &#8216;color-shading-type&#8217; to &#8216;vertical&#8217; or &#8216;horizontal&#8217;, and set color value of &#8220;secondary-color&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/set-solidbackground.webp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-39646\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/set-solidbackground-600x435.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/set-solidbackground-600x435.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/set-solidbackground-300x218.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/set-solidbackground-768x557.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/set-solidbackground.webp 904w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Linux commands to set solid color background.<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with Linux command line, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open a terminal window.<\/p>\n<p>When it opens, run the commands below one by one to disable current wallpapers for light and dark mode:<\/p>\n<pre>gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri ''<\/pre>\n<pre>gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri-dark ''<\/pre>\n<p>In case you&#8217;ve set gradient color background before, reset the &#8220;color-shading-type&#8221; via command:<\/p>\n<pre>gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.background color-shading-type<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, run the command below in set a solid color background (total dark for example):<\/p>\n<pre>gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background primary-color '#000000'<\/pre>\n<h3>How to Restore:<\/h3>\n<p>To restore the changes, simply open Settings -&gt; Background and select a wallpaper as you want. Just note that you need to do this in both Light and Dark mode in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.<\/p>\n<h3>For other Desktop Environments:<\/h3>\n<p>The steps above was written for the default GNOME Desktop. For other desktop environments, see below:<\/p>\n<p><b>XFCE (XUbuntu)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For XFCE, the default desktop in XUbuntu and many other Linux, right-click on desktop and select &#8220;<i>Desktop Settings<\/i>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>In pop-up dialog, choose &#8220;Solid color&#8221; from <i>Color<\/i> select box, and pick a color right after it.
