It&#8217;s promoted as a &#8220;hackable text editor for the 21st Century&#8221;, as it is fully customizable in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/atom-splash-600x177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"177\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-40712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/atom-splash-600x177.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/atom-splash-300x89.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/atom-splash-768x227.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/atom-splash-1536x454.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/atom-splash.jpg 1760w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The end-of-life announcement explained that Atom has no significant feature development for the past several years. The community involvement has declined significantly. So, they decided to sunset the project.<\/p>\n<p>You know, Atom is a direct competitor to Microsoft&#8217;s Visual Studio (VS) Code. And, <b>Microsoft acquired Github on June 4, 2018<\/b>. That could be the real reason (IMO) though it takes 4 years \ud83d\ude04.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, there are 6 months until the developer team archive the atom\/atom repository. It&#8217;s time for those still using Atom to migrate to an alternative solution.<\/p>\n<h3>Alternative Code Editors:<\/h3>\n<p>There are quite a few good alternatives to Atom. Though I&#8217;m not a software developer, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sublimetext.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sublime Text<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/code.visualstudio.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Visual Studio (VS) Code<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jetbrains.com\/pycharm\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PyCharm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brackets.io\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brackets<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/notepad-plus-plus.org\/downloads\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Notepad++<\/a> as I know.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The free open-source text and source code editor, Atom, is reaching the end of life!
