Tested in Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and it should work in Ubuntu 10.04 and higher.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Blender is a professional free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games.<\/p>\n<p>So far the latest stable release is Blender 2.72b, which was released a week ago. See the new features in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blender.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/blender-272b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/blender-272b.jpg\" alt=\"Blender 2.72b in Ubuntu 14.10\" width=\"600\" height=\"341\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/blender-272b.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/blender-272b-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Blender in Ubuntu Software Center is old and there&#8217;s no PPA repository that always provides the latest binaries, follow the steps below to install the latest release with new features and bug fixes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-box arconix-box-yellow\"><i class='fa fa-2x pull-left fa-lightbulb-o'><\/i><div class=\"arconix-box-content\">Thanks to Thomas Schiex, he is maintaining <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~thomas-schiex\/+archive\/ubuntu\/blender\/\" target=\"_blank\">a PPA<\/a> that contains the most recent Blender packages for all current Ubuntu releases, though there may be a small delay before the new release made into PPA.<\/p>\n<p>To add the PPA and install Blender, run below commands one by one:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:thomas-schiex\/blender\n\nsudo apt-get update\n\nsudo apt-get install blender<\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Click the link below to bring up Ubuntu Software Center and click the <i>install<\/i> button to install the package <b>libsdl1.2debian<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href='' class='arconix-button arconix-button-large arconix-button-blue'>Click to install libsdl1.2debian<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Download <b>Blender for GNU\/Linux<\/b> from the official link below. You may first check your OS type, <i>32-bit or 64-bit<\/i>, by clicking on &#8220;About This computer&#8221; from shutdown menu (top-right corner gear button). <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blender.org\/download\/\" title=\"Blender Download Page\" target=\"_blank\">www.blender.org\/download\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>3. &#8211; a). To make all users to be able to run the blender release<\/b>, extract the package to <b>\/opt\/<\/b> directory. <\/p>\n<p>To do so, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> to open terminal, run command below to open your Downloads folder as root\/administrator:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">gksudo nautilus ~\/Downloads<\/pre>\n<p>Install <b>gksu<\/b> from Ubuntu Software Center if need. Type in your user password when it asks.<\/p>\n<p>When the folder opens, do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right click on Blender package and select open with Archive Manager.<\/li>\n<li>When Archive Manager opens, select <b>Extract<\/b> to <b>computer -> \/opt\/<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When done, you should see the blender folder under \/opt\/. Create a launcher for Blender<\/b> so that we can start it from the Unity Dash or App Menu.<\/p>\n<p>Press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> to open terminal.
