Well, it&#8217;s not hard to reset your password even you&#8217;ve forgot the username and below is how to do it step by step.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> To get started, you need to boot into <i>Recovery Mode<\/i> to get a console for running commands.<\/p>\n<p>Start your machine and when you&#8217;re at the Grub boot loader, select boot with the entry says something below. You may find it under &#8220;Advanced Options for Ubuntu&#8221; option:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><b>Ubuntu, with Linux 3.x.x &#8230; (recovery mode)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/select-recovery-mode.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/select-recovery-mode.jpg\" alt=\"Boot recovery mode\" width=\"600\" height=\"249\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/select-recovery-mode.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/select-recovery-mode-300x124.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t see the grub menu, press and hold the <b>Shift<\/b> key after you pressed the Power button to boot the computer.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> In the Recovery Mode options list, select &#8220;root Drop to root shell prompt&#8221; and hit Enter. You should see the black and white command prompt at the end of the screen:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/recovery-mode.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/recovery-mode.jpg\" alt=\"Recovery Mode Root Prompt\" width=\"600\" height=\"317\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/recovery-mode.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/recovery-mode-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Now run below commands one by one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First remount the file system with read &#038; write permission:\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">mount -o rw,remount \/<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>If you don&#8217;t remember the username, below command will show you:\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">ls \/home<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>To change user password:\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">passwd USER_NAME_HERE<\/pre>\n<p>Replace USER_NAME_HERE with your username.
