It&#8217;s now a project maintained by Linux Mint, though the original developer is still one of the top contributors.<\/p>\n<p>And, he is maintaining a <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~teejee2008\/+archive\/ubuntu\/timeshift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPA repository<\/a> contains the latest packages so far for Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04 and their derivatives.<\/p>\n<h3>Install Timeshift<\/h3>\n<p><b>Timeshift is available in Ubuntu system repository, though it&#8217;s old!<\/b> User can either choose to install the old package from Ubuntu Software, or run the commands below one by one to get the latest version from PPA.<\/p>\n<p>1. First, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open a terminal window. When it opens, run command to add its official PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:teejee2008\/timeshift<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it asks and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-ppa.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43441\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-ppa-600x199.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-ppa-600x199.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-ppa-300x99.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-ppa.webp 767w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. And, <b>it&#8217;s OK to use Default options, since there&#8217;s &#8216;Settings&#8217; page to re-configure them later.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-rsync.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43445\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-rsync-545x600.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-rsync-545x600.webp 545w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-rsync-273x300.webp 273w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-rsync.webp 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After setup wizard, click on &#8220;<i>Create<\/i>&#8221; button on the main UI to start creating the first restore point!<\/p>\n<p><b>The first backup can take quite a few minutes and dozens of GB disk space (Make sure you have enable free space for saving the first snapshot)! The 2nd, 3rd, &#8230; backups can be faster and smaller, because it shares common files between snapshots to save disk space.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-firstbackup.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43446\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-firstbackup-600x500.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-firstbackup-600x500.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-firstbackup-300x250.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-firstbackup-768x640.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-firstbackup.webp 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After created backups, they are listed in the main UI window. Simply highlight one, then you can browse its content, copy and save it into another storage device if want.<\/p>\n<p>And, just click &#8216;<b>Restore<\/b>&#8216; will revert your system to the status it was when you created that snapshot, without touching user documents, music, videos, etc, unless you included them in setup Wizard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-mainui.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43447\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-mainui-600x440.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-mainui-600x440.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-mainui-300x220.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-mainui-768x564.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeshift-mainui.webp 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall Timeshift<\/h3>\n<p>Before removing the software, you may choose to remove all the backup snapshots that you don&#8217;t need anymore to free up disk space.<\/p>\n<p>Then, open terminal and run command to remove the app package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove timeshift<\/pre>\n<p>And remove the Ubuntu PPA via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:teejee2008\/timeshift<\/pre>\n<p>In case you already removed the software package, but left the backup snapshots on disk. You may try to remove them to free up disk space via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo rm -R \/timeshift\/<\/pre>\n<p>That&#8217;s all.
