Here&#8217;s how to install it in (X)Ubuntu 22.04, Linux Mint 21, and\/or Linux Lite 16.x.<\/p>\n<p>The new release, <a href=\"https:\/\/alexxcons.github.io\/blogpost_8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XFCE 4.18<\/a>, focuses on improving its Thunar file manager. They include <b>image preview<\/b>, <b>Undo\/Redo<\/b> option, <b>customize toolbar<\/b>, <b>highlight files<\/b> with different background and filename colors.<\/p>\n<p>In the <i>List View mode<\/i>, it shows how many files contained for directories, and supports for displaying &#8216;file creation date&#8217; column. Other changes include <b>split view<\/b>, <b>recursive search<\/b>, <b>new &#8216;Bookmark&#8217; menu<\/b>, as well as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Recent&#8221; in left pane for quick access recently used files.<\/li>\n<li>Trash option &#8216;Restore and Show&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Custom action menu option can now have sub-menu entries.<\/li>\n<li>Show file thumbnail for only limited size.<\/li>\n<li>Verify file checksum on copy.<\/li>\n<li>Restore tabs on startup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/thunar-uca-submenu1.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43473\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/thunar-uca-submenu1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/thunar-uca-submenu1.webp 500w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/thunar-uca-submenu1-300x211.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are as well new features for other part of the desktop, including <b>new Clock plugin<\/b> (the original DataTime and the Clock plugin combination), option to hide window decorations, new shortcut editor for <i>Thunar file manager<\/i>, <i>Xfce4-terminal<\/i> and <i>Mousepad text editor<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/panel-clock2.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43474\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/panel-clock2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/panel-clock2.webp 506w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/panel-clock2-300x36.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also improved UI scaling, and added support for thumbnail sizes x-large and xx-large, for better Hi-DPI displays support. Settings Editor now has a search function support. All header bars of Xfce Windows and Dialogs now rendered by default by the XFCE4 window manager. And, there&#8217;s now option to hide window decorations.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Install XFCE 4.18 via PPA<\/h3>\n<p>The Xubuntu Developers team has built the packages for <strong>(X)Ubuntu 22.04,<\/strong>\u00a0and their based systems into this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~xubuntu-dev\/+archive\/ubuntu\/staging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPA repository<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE 1: Ubuntu 20.04 and earlier are NO longer supported via this PPA!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE 2: As PPA description said, the packages were built for testing purpose! Do NOT install in production machine!!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Add the PPA<\/b><\/p>\n<p>First, open a terminal window either by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard or by searching from &#8216;Activities&#8217; overview or start menu depends on your system.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev\/staging<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password when it asks while no asterisk feedback, then hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/xubuntu-staging.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43477\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/xubuntu-staging-600x324.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/xubuntu-staging-600x324.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/xubuntu-staging-300x162.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/xubuntu-staging.webp 764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Refresh package cache<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu 22.04+ should automatically refresh system package cache while adding PPA, though it might not for some based systems.<\/p>\n<p>To manually update the cache, run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><b>3. Install or upgrade to XFCE 4.18<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Finally, either run the command below to install all available package updates:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt upgrade<\/pre>\n<p>or launch Software Updater (Updater Manager) and click install updates to upgrade to XFCE 4.18. Finally, <strong>restart your computer<\/strong> and enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><b>For non-XFCE users<\/b>, run the command below to install the whole desktop environment on your Ubuntu based system:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop<\/pre>\n<h3>How to Restore:<\/h3>\n<p>For XUbuntu 22.04, Linux Mint XFCE edition, and\/or Linux Lite 16.x, install ppa-purge and purge the PPA will downgrade all installed package into stock versions in system repository.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, open terminal and run commands:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ppa-purge &amp;&amp; sudo ppa-purge ppa:xubuntu-dev\/staging<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The popular lightweight desktop environment XFCE4 got a new major release after 2 years of development.
