Here are the new features and how to install guide for Ubuntu users.<\/p>\n<p>digiKam 8.0.0 is a big release after two year of development. It features <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.digikam.org\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new online documentation<\/a> that is well written with plenty of screenshots and screencasts. An <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.digikam.org\/en\/epub\/DigikamManual.epub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPUB<\/a> is also available for offline use.<\/p>\n<p>Image support has been greatly improved in this release. Choose either one that you prefer.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: digiKam Flatpak<\/h4>\n<p>1. For digiKam Flatpak package, first press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal. In the case, you can choose to use the non-install AppImage package.<\/p>\n<p>1.) First, select download the latest AppImage package from the link below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digikam.org\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download digiKam (Linux AppImage)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>2.) Then, open the Downloads folder in your file manager. And, do following steps to launch digiKam:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click on the AppImage package, and click open &#8220;Properties&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to &#8220;Permissions&#8221; tab, and enable &#8220;Allow executing file as program&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Close the &#8220;Properties&#8221; dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, right-click on AppImage, and click &#8220;Run&#8221; to launch digiKam.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam8-appimage.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43899\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam8-appimage-600x350.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam8-appimage-600x350.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam8-appimage-300x175.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam8-appimage-768x449.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam8-appimage.webp 1135w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Create shortcut for the digiKam AppImage<\/h3>\n<p>Click run the AppImage launches the digiKam software directly. If you want to add a shortcut into app launcher (search results in &#8216;Show Applications&#8217; and\/or &#8216;Activities&#8217; overview), do following steps one by one.<\/p>\n<p>1. First, it&#8217;s recommended to put the AppImage package into a certain folder for long time use. Here I chose the &#8220;<code>.local\/bin<\/code>&#8221; directory.<\/p>\n<p>Just, press <b>Ctrl+H<\/b> in Files, and navigate to .local -&gt; bin (create bin folder if not exist). Then, copy or move the digiKam AppImage into this folder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-appimage-bin.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43900\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-appimage-bin-600x334.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-appimage-bin-600x334.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-appimage-bin-300x167.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-appimage-bin-768x428.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-appimage-bin.webp 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Then, download the logo icon from web. Just, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digikam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its website<\/a>, right-click on the logo in top-left and select &#8220;<b>Save image as<\/b>&#8221; to download the file.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, rename the file to <code>digikam.svg<\/code>, and store in &#8220;<b>.local\/share\/icons<\/b>&#8221; (<em>also, create the &#8216;icons&#8217; sub-folder if not exist<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-icon.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43901\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-icon-600x334.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-icon-600x334.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-icon-300x167.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-icon-768x428.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/digikam-icon.webp 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Finally, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to create the shortcut config file:<\/p>\n<pre>gedit ~\/.local\/share\/applications\/org.kde.digikam.desktop<\/pre>\n<p><i>Replace <code>gedit<\/code> with <code>gnome-text-editor<\/code> for Ubuntu 23.10+, or use <code>nano<\/code> instead.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When file opens in text editor (or terminal for nano), paste follow lines and save it. For nano, press <strong>Ctrl+X<\/strong>, type <strong>y<\/strong> and hit Enter to save file.<\/p>\n<pre>[Desktop Entry]\r\nName=digiKam\r\nComment=digiKam photo management tool\r\nExec=digiKam-8.0.0-x86-64.appimage\r\nIcon=digikam\r\nCategories=Graphics;\r\nType=Application\r\nTerminal=false<\/pre>\n<p>NOTE: if the <b>bin<\/b> folder under <b>.local<\/b> was previously not exist. You need to log out and back in to make it in your PATH.<\/p>\n<p>4.
