To try it out, I&#8217;d recommend to install XUbuntu, Linux Mint, Linux Lite or other Linux with XFCE4 as default.<\/p>\n<p>But for lazy men who don&#8217;t want to backup personal data, re-install and re-configure favorite applications again and again, install XFCE4 Desktop on top of the current Ubuntu system is a good choice. And, here&#8217;s how to do the job step by step.<\/p>\n<h3>Install XFCE4\/XUbuntu Desktop in Ubuntu<\/h3>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, open terminal either by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard, or by searching from &#8216;Activities&#8217; overview.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/terminal-jammy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38555\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/terminal-jammy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"522\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/terminal-jammy.png 522w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/terminal-jammy-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 522px) 100vw, 522px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> When terminal opens, it&#8217;s recommended to first run command to update your system package index:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><b>3<\/b> Then, <b>either install XFCE4 desktop, and core apps without changing startup animation, login screen, etc.<\/b><\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install xfce4<\/pre>\n<p>As you can see in the screenshot, the installation only takes <b>88.5 MB (126 MB for 24.04)<\/b> disk space in my case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xfce-jammy.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43904\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xfce-jammy-600x463.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xfce-jammy-600x463.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xfce-jammy-300x232.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xfce-jammy-768x593.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xfce-jammy.webp 1110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or, <b>install the whole XUbuntu Desktop environment, to make your Ubuntu just look like XUbuntu<\/b><\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop<\/pre>\n<p>Though, it will install more packages and takes <b>550 MB (905 MB for 24.04)<\/b> disk space in my case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xubuntu-desktop.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43905\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xubuntu-desktop-600x417.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xubuntu-desktop-600x417.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xubuntu-desktop-300x208.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xubuntu-desktop-768x533.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-xubuntu-desktop.webp 1182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the case, it also asks to choose which login screen interface to use (Display Manager). Either choose <b>gdm3<\/b> to keep original login screen, or use <b>lightdm<\/b> to switch to the one that is default in XUbuntu. In my case, I&#8217;d like to right-click on top-panel and go to &#8220;Panel -&gt; Add New Items&#8221;, then add <b>Whisker Menu<\/b> to replace the default application menu. In case you don&#8217;t see the widget in the list, run command to install it:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin<\/pre>\n<h3>How to Completely Remove XFCE4\/XUbuntu Desktop<\/h3>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> If you installed the &#8216;xubuntu-desktop&#8217; package and replaced the login screen, open terminal and run command to open the configuration again and choose &#8220;<strong>gdm3<\/strong>&#8221; to restore the original login screen:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm<\/pre>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Also, to restore the original startup animation screen, run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth<\/pre>\n<p>In terminal output, type the number for <b>bgrt.plymouth<\/b> theme and hit Enter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/xfce-configsplash.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43909\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/xfce-configsplash-600x311.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/xfce-configsplash-600x311.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/xfce-configsplash-300x156.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/xfce-configsplash-768x398.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/xfce-configsplash.webp 1014w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Before removing the packages, it&#8217;s HIGHLY recommend to restart or log out, and choose either &#8220;<b>Ubuntu<\/b>&#8221; or &#8220;<b>Ubuntu on Xorg<\/b>&#8221; session to log in.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, open terminal and run the single command to remove XFCE4 or XUbuntu Desktop packages:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove xubuntu-desktop xfce4 xfce4-* libxfce4* espeak-data gnome-software-common libexo-common libgarcon-common thunar-data tumbler-common xiccd atril-common brltty-x11 wslu plymouth-theme-xubuntu* adwaita-icon-theme-full pinentry-gtk2 xterm mesa-utils lm-sensors libxapian30<\/pre>\n<p>This command will remove the most packages installed along with &#8216;xfce4&#8217; or &#8216;xubuntu-desktop&#8217; package.
