And, I&#8217;ve written <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2023\/03\/install-ubuntu-new-fonts-2204-2004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tutorial<\/a> about how to try it out in Ubuntu 22.04 and 20.04. If you prefer the old one, here&#8217;s how to revert it back in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.<\/p>\n<p>Compare to Ubuntu 23.04\/23.10, the new font in Ubuntu 24.04 looks better now in my opinion. Install the classic font<\/h4>\n<p>Since Ubuntu 23.10, a new package <code>fonts-ubuntu-classic<\/code> is available in system repository for those who prefer the classic font.<\/p>\n<p>To install the package, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open up a terminal window. Then, run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install fonts-ubuntu-classic<\/pre>\n<p><i>You may run <code>sudo apt update<\/code> to refresh system package cache first if the command above somehow does not work for you.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-classic-fonts-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46168\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-classic-fonts-noble-700x323.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-classic-fonts-noble-700x323.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-classic-fonts-noble-300x138.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-classic-fonts-noble-768x354.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/apt-classic-fonts-noble.webp 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After installing the classic fonts, text in terminal may become un-readable. <b>In the case, just log out and back in.<\/b><\/p>\n<h4>2. Download &amp; install classic font for Console (Optional)<\/h4>\n<p>The classic font for console (terminal) so far is NOT available in Ubuntu 24.04 repository. For choice, you may manually download and install <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/fonts-ubuntu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the package<\/a> for Ubuntu 22.04.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, launch a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T), and download the classic font for console package via command:<\/p>\n<pre>wget -c https:\/\/launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+archive\/primary\/+files\/fonts-ubuntu-console_0.83-6ubuntu1_all.deb<\/pre>\n<p>Next, install the package by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install .\/fonts-ubuntu-console_0.83-6ubuntu1_all.deb<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-fonts-console-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46169\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-fonts-console-noble-700x467.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-fonts-console-noble-700x467.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-fonts-console-noble-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-fonts-console-noble-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-fonts-console-noble.webp 1026w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>3. Apply the classic fonts<\/h4>\n<p><b>Option 1: Use Gnome Tweaks to apply classic fonts:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>After installed the classic fonts, it won&#8217;t apply automatically, because the default font names have changed as mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>To switch back the old ones, first search for and install <b>GNOME Tweaks<\/b> from App Center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-appcenter.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46435\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-appcenter-700x455.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-appcenter-700x455.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-appcenter-300x195.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-appcenter-768x499.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-appcenter.webp 1085w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, launch <b>Gnome Tweaks<\/b>, and in the first &#8220;Fonts&#8221; tab:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select <b>Ubuntu Regular<\/b> as Interface Text font. It will be displayed as &#8216;Ubuntu&#8217; after selection.<\/li>\n<li>And select <b>Ubuntu Mono Regular<\/b> for Monospace Text, if you also installed the classic font for console.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-classicfonts.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46436\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-classicfonts-700x470.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-classicfonts-700x470.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-classicfonts-300x201.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-classicfonts-768x515.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gnome-tweaks-classicfonts.webp 1070w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Option 2: use Linux commands to apply the classic fonts<\/b><br \/>\nFor those who are OK with Linux commands, open up a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the commands below one by one instead:<\/p>\n<pre>gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name \"Ubuntu 11\"<\/pre>\n<pre>gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface monospace-font-name \"Ubuntu Mono 13\"<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/switch-classic-fonts-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46171\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/switch-classic-fonts-noble-700x210.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/switch-classic-fonts-noble-700x210.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/switch-classic-fonts-noble-300x90.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/switch-classic-fonts-noble-768x230.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/switch-classic-fonts-noble.webp 861w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Lock &amp; Prevent updating to new fonts<\/h3>\n<p>To prevent your system from automatically updating to the new fonts, you have to lock the old fonts packages that were just installed via the previous step.<\/p>\n<p><b>Thanks to @Alex Farran, lock package version via Synaptic package manager only prevents itself and &#8216;Software Updater&#8217; from upgrading the package. However, <code>apt<\/code> command and may be other tools can still upgrade the fonts.<\/b> So, the best choice can be running the command below in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-mark hold fonts-ubuntu fonts-ubuntu-console<\/pre>\n<p>For the graphical way (NOT work for apt), first open App Center, search for and install Synatic Package Manager.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-synaptic-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46170\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-synaptic-noble-700x482.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-synaptic-noble-700x482.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-synaptic-noble-300x206.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-synaptic-noble-768x529.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/install-synaptic-noble.webp 991w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then launch &#8220;Synaptic&#8221;, click &#8220;Search&#8221; and search &#8220;<b>fonts-ubuntu<\/b>&#8220;. Finally, do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Press and hold <b>Ctrl<\/b> then highlight both &#8220;fonts-ubuntu&#8221; and &#8220;fonts-ubuntu-console&#8221; packages.<\/li>\n<li>Go to menu &#8220;Package -&gt; Lock Version&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lock-ubuntufonts.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43927\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lock-ubuntufonts-600x380.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lock-ubuntufonts-600x380.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lock-ubuntufonts-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lock-ubuntufonts-768x486.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lock-ubuntufonts.webp 949w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How to go back the new Ubuntu Fonts<\/h3>\n<p>First, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to unlock the font packages:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-mark unhold fonts-ubuntu fonts-ubuntu-console<\/pre>\n<p>Then, also search for and launch Synaptic package manager.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/open-synaptic.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43928\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/open-synaptic.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/open-synaptic.webp 495w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/open-synaptic-300x167.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it opens, search &#8220;<b>fonts-ubuntu<\/b>&#8220;.
