The new release features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unify Community and Ultimate Editions with single product.<\/li>\n<li>New default theme.<\/li>\n<li>Claude AI support.<\/li>\n<li>command completion &#8211; new way to access context-aware actions directly from code completion.<\/li>\n<li>Full Java 25 support.<\/li>\n<li>And more. See <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jetbrains.com\/idea\/2025\/12\/intellij-idea-2025-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release note<\/a> for details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Intellij IDEA is available to install in Ubuntu via different ways. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Snap,<\/li>\n<li>Flatpak,<\/li>\n<li>official tarball,<\/li>\n<li>and Ubuntu PPA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Choose either one that you prefer.<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Install Intellij IDEA via Snap package<\/h3>\n<p>JetBrains provides official Linux package through both Snap and tarball. Which is super easy to install for Ubuntu users.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Snap package Features:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Official package by JetBrains.<\/li>\n<li>Run in sandbox environment.<\/li>\n<li>amd64 (x86_64) only.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For all current Ubuntu releases, just launch <b>Ubuntu Software<\/b> (or App Center), then search and install &#8216;Intellij IDEA&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50176\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/idea253-snap-700x426.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/idea253-snap-700x426.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/idea253-snap-300x182.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/idea253-snap-768x467.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/idea253-snap.webp 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For choice, you may press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open terminal, and run command instead the install the Snap package:<\/p>\n<pre>snap install intellij-idea --classic<\/pre>\n<p>The snap package installs updates automatically. You can check (and install if any) updates manually by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>snap refresh intellij-idea<\/pre>\n<h3>Method 2: Install Intellij IDEA via Flatpak package (Unofficial)<\/h3>\n<p>Another easy way to install the IDE is using <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/en\/apps\/com.jetbrains.IntelliJ-IDEA-Ultimate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flatpak package<\/a>. Which works in most Linux, though also run in sandbox environment.<br \/>\n<b>The Flatpak package Features:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Community maintained.<\/li>\n<li>Run in sandbox.<\/li>\n<li>amd64 (x86_64) and arm64 support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ubuntu users just need to press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal. However, there are only third-party maintained PPAs.<\/p>\n<p>As far as I know, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~xtradeb\/+archive\/ubuntu\/apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xtradeb PPA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~mmk2410\/+archive\/ubuntu\/intellij-idea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcel Kapfer&#8217;s PPA<\/a> are keeping updated with the most recent IDE packages:<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Add PPA:<\/p>\n<p>For the xtradeb PPA, so far only support the Community Edition for Ubuntu 24.04 and Ubuntu 25.04 on both <code>amd64<\/code> and <code>arm64<\/code>, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xtradeb\/apps<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/xtradeb-ppa.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44332\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/xtradeb-ppa-600x407.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/xtradeb-ppa-600x407.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/xtradeb-ppa-300x203.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/xtradeb-ppa-768x521.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/xtradeb-ppa.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Marcel Kapfer&#8217;s PPA, that supports both Community and Ultimate editions for Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, 18.04, 20.04, 22.04, 24.04, 24.10 on <code>amd64<\/code>, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mmk2410\/intellij-idea<\/pre>\n<p><b>2.<b> Then install the IDE by running command ():<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install intellij-idea-community<\/pre>\n<p>NOTE: Linux Mint user needs to run <code>sudo apt update<\/code> after adding PPA to manually refresh system package cache.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/apt-idea.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44342\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/apt-idea-600x407.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/apt-idea-600x407.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/apt-idea-300x203.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/apt-idea-768x521.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/apt-idea.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Uninstall IntelliJ IDEA<\/h2>\n<p>For the Snap package, just remove it from Ubuntu Software or App Center.<\/p>\n<p>For the Flatpak package, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to remove it:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak uninstall --delete-data com.jetbrains.IntelliJ-IDEA-Ultimate<\/pre>\n<p>And, run <code>flatpak uninstall --unused<\/code> to remove useless run-time libraries.<\/p>\n<p>For IDEA installed via the official Tarball, just remove the source folder as well as <code>.desktop<\/code> file under <code>.local\/share\/applications<\/code> directory.<\/p>\n<p>For the Ubuntu PPA package, open terminal and run command to remove it:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove intellij-idea-community<\/pre>\n<p>Also remove the Ubuntu PPA by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xtradeb\/apps<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This simple tutorial shows how to install the latest Intellij IDEA (version 2025.3 updated) in Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 24.04.
