However, it&#8217;s only available for Ubuntu LTS, and uses the old default &#8216;Humanity&#8217; icon theme, which looks very outdated.<\/p>\n<p>To fix the issue, a free open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/costales\/yaru-colors-folder-color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yaru-colors-folder-color<\/a> project was created to work along with system default &#8216;<code>Folder Color<\/code>&#8216;, so to have folder icon in different colors while keep using default Yaru theme.<\/p>\n<p>The project is discontinued, due to switch to the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/costales\/folder-color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new &#8220;Folder Color&#8221;<\/a> project, which works out-of-the-box with Yaru colors integration. And, not only for Ubuntu LTS, but also supports all current short-term releases, such as Ubuntu 24.04.<\/p>\n<p>With it, user can right-click on any folder, to get the menu to change folder color to &#8216;Blue&#8217;, &#8216;Brown&#8217;, &#8216;Green&#8217;, &#8216;Grey&#8217;, &#8216;Pink&#8217;, &#8216;Purple&#8217;, &#8216;Red&#8217;, and &#8216;Yellow&#8217;. As well as adding emblem such as &#8216;Important&#8217;, &#8216;In Progress&#8217;, &#8216;Favorite&#8217;, &#8216;Finished&#8217;, and &#8216;New&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>After changing color or adding emblem, the folder will also have a &#8216;<b>Default<\/b>&#8216; option in that menu, to restore to default.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/noble-folder-color.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46471\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/noble-folder-color-700x429.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/noble-folder-color-700x429.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/noble-folder-color-300x184.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/noble-folder-color-768x471.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/noble-folder-color.webp 997w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Install the New &#8216;Folder Color&#8217; extension<\/h3>\n<p><b>NOTE: This extension supports only Ubuntu with default GNOME, Ubuntu Cinnamon (not tested) and Ubuntu MATE.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The developer maintains an <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~costales\/+archive\/ubuntu\/folder-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu PPA<\/a> contains the package for all current Ubuntu releases, including Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, and Ubuntu 23.10.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, open terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costales\/folder-color<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it asks and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/folder-color-ppa.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44501\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/folder-color-ppa-600x234.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/folder-color-ppa-600x234.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/folder-color-ppa-300x117.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/folder-color-ppa-768x299.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/folder-color-ppa.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> If you&#8217;re following this tutorial in old Ubuntu 18.04, then you need to manually refresh system package cache after adding PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Finally, install the file manager extension by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install folder-color<\/pre>\n<p>For Ubuntu MATE, also install the <code>folder-color-caja<\/code> package, so the command will be:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install folder-color folder-color-caja<\/pre>\n<p>And, Cinnamon needs to install <code>folder-color-nemo<\/code> instead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/apt-folder-color.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44502\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/apt-folder-color-600x244.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/apt-folder-color-600x244.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/apt-folder-color-300x122.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/apt-folder-color-768x312.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/apt-folder-color.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>4. To apply the new extension<\/b>, you may need to run <code>nautilus -q<\/code> command in terminal.
