For the most recent version,\u00a0VideoLAN provides <a href=\"https:\/\/snapcraft.io\/vlc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snap package<\/a>, which is however stuck at version 3.0.20 and runs in sandbox environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/vlc3017.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-37896\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/vlc3017-600x386.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/vlc3017-600x386.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/vlc3017-300x193.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/vlc3017-768x494.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/vlc3017.webp 1023w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Changes in recent versions of VLC media player:<\/h3>\n<p>VLC 3.0.23 is a minor release contains security vulnerability fixes, dark mode improvements, prepare compatibility for FFmpeg 8.0, Qt6, and other recent libraries, as well as fixes for JFIF detection and image rendering issue with D3D11.<\/p>\n<p>Changes in VLC 3.0.22 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add official Windows on Arm64 support.<\/li>\n<li>Fix support for Windows XP SP3.<\/li>\n<li>Dark palette for the Qt interface.<\/li>\n<li>Add AMD Fluid Motion Frames support.<\/li>\n<li>Add dav1d-all-layers option for the dav1d decoder.<\/li>\n<li>Support A_ATRAC\/AT1 (Sony ATRAC1 Codec) in matroska.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Features in the most recent VLC 3.0.21 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AMD Super Resolution Support.<\/li>\n<li>AMF VQ Enhancer video filter.<\/li>\n<li>D3D11 option to use NVIDIA TrueHDR to generate HDR from SDR sources.<\/li>\n<li>D3D11 HDR option to turn on\/off HDR for all sources regardless of the display.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>VLC 3.0.20 contains only bug-fixes, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fix crash when AV1 hardware decoder fails<\/li>\n<li>Fix crash with some AMD drivers old versions<\/li>\n<li>Other fixes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And, VLC 3.0.19 features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Super Resolution scaling with nVidia and Intel GPUs<\/li>\n<li>Hardware decoding of AV1 on Windows (DxVA)<\/li>\n<li>Improve AV1 HDR support with software decoding<\/li>\n<li>Improve SMB compatibility with Windows 11 hosts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videolan.org\/news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news page<\/a> in VLC website.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Install VLC 3.0.23 via PPA in Ubuntu<\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned, the new release is available as Snap package in Ubuntu Software (or App Center), and Flatpak package in Flathub repository.<\/p>\n<p>For those hate running app in sandbox, here&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/vlc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> contains the package for Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 24.04, and Ubuntu 25.04\/25.10. Not only for x86_64, but also arm64\/armhf CPU architecture types are supported.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open a terminal window. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/vlc<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it asks for sudo authentication, then hit Enter to continue. And, RTSP input support has been added into this PPA.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vlc-ppa-jammy.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44113\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vlc-ppa-jammy-600x407.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vlc-ppa-jammy-600x407.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vlc-ppa-jammy-300x203.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vlc-ppa-jammy-768x521.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vlc-ppa-jammy.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> For Linux Mint, also run command to refresh package cache, which is done automatically while adding PPA in Ubuntu 20.04 +.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Finally, either update VLC package using &#8216;Software Updater&#8217; or install\/upgrade the package directly by running apt command in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install vlc<\/pre>\n<p><b>NOTE:<\/b> If you have Ubuntu Pro enabled, then you need to specify package source (PPA in the case).
