They include Snap, Flatpak, and official tarball.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: All the Android Studio packages below support only <code>amd64<\/code> (Intel\/AMD) CPU architecture type.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Install Android Studio via Snap package<\/h3>\n<p>The easiest way to install the IDE is using the Snap package, which however runs in sandbox environment. At the moment of writing, the Snap package is at version 2025.1.3, though the newer 2025.2.1 is in dev channel now. Just install it and wait, it will automatically update to the latest once published.<\/p>\n<p>Simply launch App Center (or Ubuntu Software for 22.04), then search &amp; install Android Studio:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50038\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-snap2025-700x463.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-snap2025-700x463.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-snap2025-300x198.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-snap2025-768x508.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-snap2025.webp 986w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For the updates of the Snap package, either wait for automatic updates, or use command:<\/p>\n<pre>snap refresh android-studio<\/pre>\n<h3>Method 2: Install Android Studio via Flatpak package<\/h3>\n<p>The IDE is also available to install as <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/apps\/com.google.AndroidStudio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flatpak package<\/a>, which also runs in sandbox environment.<\/p>\n<p>Linux Mint 21\/22 users can simply search for &amp; install it from &#8220;Software Manager&#8221;, though you may need to enable unverified Flatpak in preferences. Without doing the job manually, there&#8217;s an <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~maarten-fonville\/+archive\/ubuntu\/android-studio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu PPA<\/a> contains script to automatically download the tarball and create app shortcut for it.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a trustworthy PPA repository maintained by Maarten Fonville, a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntu-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu Users<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~kubuntu-testers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KUbuntu Testers<\/a> teams. And, so far supports Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 25.04, and Ubuntu 25.10.<\/p>\n<p>1. First, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal. When terminal opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-fonville\/android-studio<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password when it asks (no asterisk feedback) and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50039\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-ppa-noble-700x475.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-ppa-noble-700x475.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-ppa-noble-300x204.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/androidstudio-ppa-noble.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><br \/>\n2. After adding PPA, Linux Mint user need to manually refresh system cache, though it&#8217;s done automatically now in Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>3. Finally, install the package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install android-studio<\/pre>\n<p><i><b>The PPA contains installer for multiple versions of the IDE. Besides installing the latest stable, you may also paste the last command into terminal and hit &#8220;Tab&#8221; to list other choices. For example, install the 2025.2.1 from Canary channel via command:<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install android-studio-2025.2.1<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50040\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/apt-androidstudio2020521-700x528.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/apt-androidstudio2020521-700x528.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/apt-androidstudio2020521-300x226.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/apt-androidstudio2020521.webp 754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned above, the PPA package will automatically download the tarball from the official download link, install it, and create app menu integration for you.<\/p>\n<p>When done, simply search for and launch the IDE from start menu, application menu, or &#8216;Activities&#8217; overview depends on your Desktop environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-android-studio.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44905\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-android-studio.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-android-studio.webp 561w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-android-studio-300x150.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Option 2: Manually download &amp; install the tarball<\/h4>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t trust any third-party sources, simply go to Android website via the link below and click download the tarball.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/studio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Android Studio<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50041\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/download-androidstudio-otter-700x499.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/download-androidstudio-otter-700x499.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/download-androidstudio-otter-300x214.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/download-androidstudio-otter-768x548.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/download-androidstudio-otter.webp 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then, extract the tarball, and move the sub-folder to anywhere as you want for long time use. In my case, I created &#8220;MyApps&#8221; in user home, then move the android-studio folder into that directory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/extract-androidstudio2025.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50042\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/extract-androidstudio2025-700x473.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/extract-androidstudio2025-700x473.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/extract-androidstudio2025-300x203.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/extract-androidstudio2025-768x519.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/extract-androidstudio2025.webp 1217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To create app shortcut from launching Android Studio from start menu:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First launch <strong>text editor<\/strong> and add following lines to an empty file:\n<pre>[Desktop Entry]\r\nVersion=1.0\r\nType=Application\r\nTerminal=false\r\nName=Android Studio\r\nComment=Integrated Android developer tools for development and debugging.\r\nExec=<b>\/path\/to\/studio.sh<\/b>\r\nIcon=<b>\/path\/to\/studio.svg<\/b>\r\nCategories=GNOME;GTK;Development;IDE;<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Replace <code>\/path\/to\/studio.sh<\/code> and <code>\/path\/to\/studio.svg<\/code> according where you save the source folder. Press <strong>Ctrl+L<\/strong> in that folder to quickly copy the PATH.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, save the file to <code>.local\/share\/applications<\/code> as name <code>android-studio.desktop<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50043\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry-700x384.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry-700x384.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry-300x165.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry-768x422.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry-1536x844.webp 1536w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry-1320x725.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/android-studio-desktopentry.webp 1624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If everything&#8217;s done properly, you should be able to launch it from your system main menu few moments later.<\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall Android Studio<\/h3>\n<p>Depends on how you installed the package, remove the IDE by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the Snap package, simply remove from Ubuntu Software.<\/li>\n<li>For Flatpak package, open terminal and run command:\n<pre>flatpak uninstall --delete-data com.google.AndroidStudio<\/pre>\n<p>Also run <code>flatpak uninstall --unused<\/code> to remove useless run-times.<\/li>\n<li>For Ubuntu PPA package, run command:\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove android-studio*<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you downloaded &amp; installed the tarball manually, then just remove the source folder as well as <code>.desktop<\/code> shortcut file under <i>.local\/share\/applications<\/i> directory.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This simple tutorial shows how to install the latest Android Studio (2025.2.1 updated) in Ubuntu 22.04 and\/or Ubuntu 24.04.
