However, it&#8217;s not so easy for beginners to install &amp; setup Wine.<\/p>\n<p>So, here I&#8217;m going to show how to install iTunes using Bottles (a wine runner) to make things as easy as possible.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE that, iTunes running with wine <b>does NOT detect iPhone<\/b>, at least not for me. But, it&#8217;s OK for syncing music via iCloud! Though, it should work in most other Linux!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE 2: In this tutorial I installed iTunes 12.8.0.150! Newer versions either crash frequently or run into blank window.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Install Bottles<\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned above, Bottles is a wine runner to make running Windows apps in Linux super easy. The only downside could be that it&#8217;s only available as Flatpak runs in sandbox.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, press <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run command to enable Flatpak support:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install flatpak<\/pre>\n<p><i>Other Linux can follow official <a href=\"https:\/\/flatpak.org\/setup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">setup guide<\/a> to enable Flatpak support.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/apt-flatpak-jammy.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-39141\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/apt-flatpak-jammy-600x229.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/apt-flatpak-jammy-600x229.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/apt-flatpak-jammy-300x115.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/apt-flatpak-jammy-768x294.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/apt-flatpak-jammy.webp 777w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, install Bottles as Flatpak by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak install https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/appstream\/com.usebottles.bottles.flatpakref<\/pre>\n<p><i>This command may have more than a thousand MB download due to run-time libraries. Don&#8217;t be worried about it. By default, it has only file access to your user &#8216;<i>Downloads<\/i>&#8216; folder.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to make apps, that are installed through Bottles, visible in start menu and\/or dock, and access music files in other folders (such as &#8216;Music&#8217; folder), then you have manually grant permissions.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Use command to grant file access permission:<\/h4>\n<p>To allow Bottles to add apps into start menu, run command in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak override com.usebottles.bottles --user --filesystem=xdg-data\/applications<\/pre>\n<p>To allow Bottles (iTunes) to access your user Music folder, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak override com.usebottles.bottles --user --filesystem=xdg-music<\/pre>\n<h4>Option 2: Use Flatseal, graphical tool.<\/h4>\n<p>Flatseal is a popular graphical tool to manage permissions for Flatpak applications.<\/p>\n<p>First, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to install Flatpseal:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak install https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/appstream\/com.github.tchx84.Flatseal.flatpakref<\/pre>\n<p>After installed the tool, launch it. Choose &#8220;Bottles&#8221; from left, and click add &#8220;Filesystem -&gt; Other files&#8221; permission for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>xdg-music<\/li>\n<li>xdg-data\/applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flatseal-bottles-permissions.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44959\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flatseal-bottles-permissions-600x382.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flatseal-bottles-permissions-600x382.webp 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flatseal-bottles-permissions-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flatseal-bottles-permissions-768x489.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flatseal-bottles-permissions.webp 1284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Download iTunes (exe)<\/h3>\n<p>Apple website only shows the download for the latest version of iTunes, which is NOT working good (even not work so far) with current version of Wine.<\/p>\n<p>For the old versions, there&#8217;s a 3rd party website that provides a large list of downloads. <b>All download URLs in that page are official (point to apple.com), the website only lists them out for you.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theiphonewiki.com\/wiki\/ITunes#64-bit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download iTunes (old versions)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>In my tests, iTunes 12.9.x is the most recent version that installs, which however CRASH quite often. The <a href=\"https:\/\/secure-appldnld.apple.com\/itunes12\/091-81692-20180709-A4DF288B-8929-401F-AD73-4189359D8A6B\/iTunes64Setup.exe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iTunes 12.8.0.150<\/a> is the last that&#8217;s working good.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: Wine and Bottles keep updating with new features and bug-fixes. So, newer iTunes versions might be working in future when you see this tutorial. Try for your self.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Install iTunes<\/h3>\n<p>Now, search for and launch &#8220;Bottles&#8221; from start menu or &#8216;Activities&#8217; overview depends on your desktop environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-bottles.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44958\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-bottles.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-bottles.webp 490w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/launch-bottles-300x168.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: first time installing a Flatpak app, need a <b>log out and back in<\/b> to make app icon visible in start menu.
