It&#8217;s marked as the last dev release for the next major 3.0 version.<\/p>\n<p>The new release has a <b>new welcome dialog<\/b>, with <code>Personalize<\/code> tab to set your favorite theme, icon and font scaling, and select program language, <code>Contribute<\/code> tab with a few links for who want to contribute to GIMP, and <code>Create<\/code> tab with quick buttons to create, open, open recent images. Some icons are updated to be better visible in dark theme. And, &#8220;Darker&#8221; theme due to lack of contributors.<\/p>\n<p>All painting tools now have an &#8220;<b>Expand Layers<\/b>&#8221; option, allowing to auto-expand layers when painting across layer boundaries. The Gradient tool now uses GeglColor internally, and picked color is internally kept as a GeglColor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45625\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-700x387.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-700x387.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-300x166.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-768x425.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918-1320x730.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gimp-29918.webp 1466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, there are new and updated floating data actions, including new actions <code>edit-paste-float<\/code> and <code>edit-paste-float-in-place<\/code>; rename <code>select-float<\/code> to <code>select-cut-float<\/code> to do cut &amp; paste as fload in one action; add <code>select-copy-float<\/code> to do copy &amp; paste as float in one action; And, add &#8220;Select -&gt; Float&#8221; menu options.<\/p>\n<p>Other changes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/news\/2024\/02\/21\/gimp-2-99-18-released\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIMP 2.99.18<\/a> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New snap options: <code>Snap to Bounding Boxes<\/code> and <code>Snap to Equidistance<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Ablility to use fonts with custom styles.<\/li>\n<li>No longer rename identically named fonts with #1 or #2, etc, meaning Font names are not unique anymore<\/li>\n<li>New palette import support: SwatchBooker.<\/li>\n<li>Artificially set PANGOCAIRO_BACKEND=fc when running on Windows to use the fontconfig backend.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;view-zoom-*&#8221; actions are not radio actions anymore.<\/li>\n<li>Improve thumbnail loading algorithm<\/li>\n<li>GEGL operation filters are now non-destructive by default. They create layer effects instead.<\/li>\n<li>Device Status dockable shows context-sensitive colors<\/li>\n<li>Palettes are now GeglColor-based and stored with a lot more precision.<\/li>\n<li>Color History and various color selectors are now space-invaded<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to install GIMP 2.99.18<\/h3>\n<p>The development release has a download page for Linux, Windows, and macOS:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/downloads\/devel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download GIMP Development Release<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For Linux, it&#8217;s an universal Flatpak package runs in sandbox. To install it, do following steps one by one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, enable Flatpak support by following the official <a href=\"https:\/\/flatpak.org\/setup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">setup guide<\/a>.
