For those who prefer the native .deb<\/code> app packages, here’s new unofficial PPA for installing the most recent Kdenlive video editor 24.08.3 in Ubuntu 24.04<\/strong> and 24.12.2 in Ubuntu 24.10.<\/p>\n

Since version 24.02, the Kdenlive video editor is finally ported to Qt6 plus KDE Frameworks 6<\/b>, which brings big performance improvements, but also a few regressions.<\/p>\n

Due to this change, the developer team discontinued the official Kdenlive PPA<\/a>, since KF6 is NOT yet made into Ubuntu repositories.<\/p>\n

The official packages<\/a> are now only Flatpak and AppImage, that run in sandbox. For those who prefer the .deb<\/code> package format, here’s the new unofficial PPA for choice.<\/p>\n

Kdenlive 24.04 with Qt5 and KDE Frameworks 5<\/p><\/div>\n

The PPA contains the package backported from Debian Unstable<\/a>, which continues building the video editor with Qt5<\/b> + KDE Frameworks 5<\/b> (as mentioned KF6 is not available in system repositories) which are still supported by Kdenlive’s building system.<\/p>\n

Install Kdenlive 24.08\/24.10 from Unofficial PPA in Ubuntu<\/h3>\n

UPDATE: Kdenlive 24.12 dropped Qt5 support, and requires Qt6 >= 6.5.0. The PPA contains 24.08.3 for Ubuntu 24.04 (no longer updates) and 24.12.2 for Ubuntu 24.10!\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

NOTE: the package in the new unofficial PPA<\/a> is NOT well tested. It seems working good in my case, but without well testing because I know quite few about how to use the video editor.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

1. The PPA so far supports amd64<\/code> (Intel\/AMD), and arm64<\/code>\/armhf<\/code> (Raspberry Pi) CPU platforms.<\/p>\n

To add the PPA, press Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open terminal (or konsole), then run command:<\/p>\n

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/kdenlive<\/pre>\n
Type user password for sudo authentication, though there’s no asterisk feedback, and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n

2. For Linux Mint user, refresh the system package cache after adding PPA via command:<\/p>\n
sudo apt update<\/pre>\n
3. Finally, install Kdenlive (or upgrade from the stock version) by running command:<\/p>\n
sudo apt install kdenlive mediainfo<\/pre>\n
NOTE: for non-KDE Plasma Desktop users, there will be lots of Qt and KDE libraries to be installed as dependency libraries.<\/i><\/p>\n

Uninstall:<\/h3>\n
To uninstall the unofficial Ubuntu PPA, open terminal or konsole (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:<\/p>\n
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/kdenlive<\/pre>\n
For Linux Mint, also run sudo apt update<\/code> to manually refresh package cache.<\/i><\/p>\n
And, remove the Kdenlive deb package as well as its dependencies by running command:<\/p>\n
