The PPA contains the latest Thunderbird Stable, Firefox ESR, and Firefox stable as .deb packages.<\/p>\n<p>The PPA is &#8220;official&#8221; but maintained by Ubuntu Team. So far, it supports Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 25.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 20.04, and even old Ubuntu 18.04\/16.04 ESM.<\/p>\n<h4>1. Add the PPA<\/h4>\n<p>First, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open up a terminal window. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam\/ppa<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password (no asterisk feedback, so just type in mind) when it asks and hit Enter to continue<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-ppa.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45896\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-ppa-700x440.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-ppa-700x440.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-ppa-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-ppa-768x482.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-ppa.webp 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>2. Setup PPA Priority<\/h4>\n<p>The Thunderbird DEB package in Ubuntu repository is a wrapper for the SNAP, which has higher version number! You need to setup a higher priority for the PPA package.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, run command to create &amp; edit config file:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo nano \/etc\/apt\/preferences.d\/mozillateamppa<\/pre>\n<p><i>Here I user <code>nano<\/code> text editor works in most desktops. You may replace it with <code>gnome-text-editor<\/code> for default GNOME, or other editor depends on your desktop environment.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When file opens, paste following lines and save it:<\/p>\n<pre>Package: thunderbird*\r\nPin: release o=LP-PPA-mozillateam\r\nPin-Priority: 1001<\/pre>\n<p>For choice, you may add 3 more lines below:<\/p>\n<pre>Package: thunderbird*\r\nPin: release o=Ubuntu\r\nPin-Priority: -1<\/pre>\n<p>It sets the \u00a0priority of thunderbird packages from PPA to 1001, and the one from system repository to -1 which will prevent it from being installed.<\/p>\n<p>When done editing the file, press Ctrl+S to save and Ctrl+X to exit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-prefs.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48283\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-prefs-700x505.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-prefs-700x505.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-prefs-300x216.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-prefs.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>3. Install Thunderbird Deb package<\/h4>\n<p>Now, you need to run the command below to manually refresh system package cache:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, run <code>apt install<\/code> command to install the .deb package from PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install thunderbird<\/pre>\n<p><i>If you everything goes well, it should output that&#8217;s getting package from <code>ppa.launchpadcontent.net<\/code><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-thunderbird.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45897\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-thunderbird-700x349.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-thunderbird-700x349.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-thunderbird-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-thunderbird-768x383.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-thunderbird.webp 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Another Way: Install Thunderbird with official Linux tarball<\/h3>\n<p>The PPA is a good choice for those who hate running the mail client in sandbox! For choice, user can choose the portable tarball offered by Mozilla.<\/p>\n<p>1. First, click download the Linux tarball from Thunderbird website:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thunderbird.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Thunderbird<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>2. Then, open file manager, navigate to Downloads folder, and extract the Thunderbird tarball.<\/p>\n<p>This is a portable package with no installation required. Just navigate to extracted folder, and double-click the &#8220;thunberbird&#8221; or &#8220;thunderbird-bin&#8221; file should launch the email client.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/extract-thunderbird136.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48282\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/extract-thunderbird136-700x392.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/extract-thunderbird136-700x392.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/extract-thunderbird136-300x168.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/extract-thunderbird136-768x430.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/extract-thunderbird136.webp 1049w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. If you like the portable package, then you may move it to another location for long time use. And, then create a desktop entry for it, so you can launch it like other apps from start menu (or app grid).<\/p>\n<p>In my case, I moved the &#8220;thunderbird&#8221; sub-folder into user&#8217;s <b>.local<\/b> folder (press <b>Ctrl+H<\/b> to view\/hide the folder).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/move-thunderbird-local.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45900\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/move-thunderbird-local-700x485.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/move-thunderbird-local-700x485.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/move-thunderbird-local-300x208.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/move-thunderbird-local-768x532.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/move-thunderbird-local.webp 1095w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. In the empty document, paste the following lines (replace username <b>ji<\/b> to yours!!):<\/p>\n<pre>[Desktop Entry]\r\nEncoding=UTF-8\r\nName=Thunderbird\r\nComment=Send and receive mail with Thunderbird\r\nGenericName=Mail Client\r\nKeywords=Email;E-mail;Newsgroup;Feed;RSS\r\n<b>Exec=\/home\/ji\/.local\/thunderbird\/thunderbird %u<\/b>\r\nTerminal=false\r\nX-MultipleArgs=false\r\nType=Application\r\n<b>Icon=\/home\/ji\/.local\/thunderbird\/chrome\/icons\/default\/default128.png<\/b>\r\nCategories=Application;Network;Email;\r\nMimeType=x-scheme-handler\/mailto;application\/x-xpinstall;x-scheme-handler\/webcal;x-scheme-handler\/mid;message\/rfc822;\r\nStartupNotify=true\r\nActions=Compose;Contacts\r\n\r\n[Desktop Action Compose]\r\nName=Compose New Message\r\n<b>Exec=\/home\/ji\/.local\/thunderbird\/thunderbird -compose<\/b>\r\nOnlyShowIn=Messaging Menu;Unity;\r\n\r\n[Desktop Action Contacts]\r\nName=Contacts\r\n<b>Exec=\/home\/ji\/.local\/thunderbird\/thunderbird -addressbook<\/b>\r\nOnlyShowIn=Messaging Menu;Unity;<\/pre>\n<p><b>NOTE: Replace user\u00a0 &#8216;ji&#8217; in lines above with yours. And in my case, I put the &#8220;thunderbird&#8221; folder into user&#8217;s &#8216;.local&#8217; sub-folder.
