Here are the workarounds to get rid of it!<\/p>\n<p>As you may know, the Thunderbird package in Ubuntu 24.04 is a Snap package that runs in sandbox! Due to this switch, the &#8220;<code>thunderbird.tmp<\/code>&#8221; sub-folder will be created on every launch (even after you deleted it) of the email client, in user&#8217;s Downloads folder.<\/p>\n<p>According to this <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.snapcraft.io\/t\/thunderbird-tmp-folder-in-download-directory\/21033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<i>This is a tmp dir to store files you choose to open directly from Thunderbird. The snap can\u2019t use the usual (insecure) \/tmp location so had to choose something widely available so other apps can open the files if chosen.<\/i>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-tmp.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45906\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-tmp-700x449.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-tmp-700x449.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-tmp-300x192.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-tmp-768x493.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/thunderbird-tmp.webp 1012w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it&#8217;s a sandbox permission issue! Which, also occurred in Ubuntu 22.04 (later fixed) for Firefox Snap package.<\/p>\n<p>Until Ubuntu or Mozilla fixed the issue, here are 2 workarounds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Switch to Thunderbird Deb package<\/b><\/li>\n<li>or <b>Hide the &#8220;thunderbird.tmp&#8221; folder<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For those who want to switch Thunderbird to the classic <code>.deb<\/code> package format, I&#8217;ve written a <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2024\/03\/install-thunderbird-deb-ubuntu-2404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">step by step guide<\/a> talking about it.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Hide thunderbird.tmp<\/h3>\n<p>In Linux, all the files and folders with <b>.<\/b> at the beginning of their names are hidden by default. If you can&#8217;t change the names for the files\/folders, then add their names into a <code>.hidden<\/code> file within same folder will do the same trick!<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Use Text Editor<\/h4>\n<p>First, press <b>Super<\/b> (Windows Logo) key to trigger the overview screen. Then, search for and launch &#8220;text editor&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/open-texteditor.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43854\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/open-texteditor.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/open-texteditor.webp 480w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/open-texteditor-300x169.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When text editor opens, create new empty document (if need), and type <b>thunderbird.tmp<\/b> into the empty file. Finally, go to menu and click &#8220;Save As&#8221; (or press Ctrl+Shift+S).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hidden-thunderbird.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45907\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hidden-thunderbird-700x492.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hidden-thunderbird-700x492.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hidden-thunderbird-300x211.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hidden-thunderbird-768x540.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hidden-thunderbird.webp 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>Tips: you can hide more files\/folders under that folder (meaning Downloads in the case), by adding their file-names in this file, one name per line.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In the pop-up &#8220;Save As&#8221; dialog, choose user &#8220;Downloads&#8221; folder as destination folder, and name the file to <b>.hidden<\/b>, finally click Save button.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/save-hidden.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45908\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/save-hidden-700x367.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/save-hidden-700x367.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/save-hidden-300x157.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/save-hidden-768x403.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/save-hidden.webp 941w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When done, open <i>Downloads<\/i> folder, press <b>Ctrl+H<\/b> can then toggle view or hide the <code>thunderbird.tmp<\/code> sub-folder.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 2: Single command to hide the folder.<\/h4>\n<p>For those who are OK with Linux command, simply press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open terminal.<\/p>\n<p>When terminal opens, run single command:<\/p>\n<pre>echo \"thunderbird.tmp\" &gt; ~\/Downloads\/.hidden<\/pre>\n<p>This command will create the &#8216;.hidden&#8217; file if not exist and write that folder name into it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/echo-hidden.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45909\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/echo-hidden-700x411.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/echo-hidden-700x411.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/echo-hidden-300x176.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/echo-hidden-768x451.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/echo-hidden.webp 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all.
