Here&#8217;s step by step guide shows you how to install and change the theme in Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04, and Ubuntu 20.04.<\/p>\n<p>The startup (and shutdown, reboot) animation screen is handled by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plymouth_(software)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plymouth<\/a>. Plymouth supports themes, and the default is <b>bgrt<\/b> in Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>If you just want to replace or disable the manufacturer logo, then I&#8217;ve written a <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2022\/10\/replace-manufacturer-ubuntu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to guide<\/a> in this page. While, here I&#8217;m going to show you how to completely replace it with another one.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_46284\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-noble-bootscreen.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46284\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46284\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-noble-bootscreen-700x438.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-noble-bootscreen-700x438.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-noble-bootscreen-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-noble-bootscreen-768x480.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-noble-bootscreen.webp 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-46284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ubuntu default boot animation screen<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Install Plymouth Themes<\/h3>\n<h4>Option 1: Install from System Repository<\/h4>\n<p>Ubuntu has some themes in system repository, they are usually the default themes for the official flavors, such as KUbuntu and XUbuntu.<\/p>\n<p>First, search for and install <b>Synaptic Package Manager<\/b> from either Ubuntu Software or App Center.<\/p>\n<p>Then, launch <b>Synaptic Package Manager<\/b>, and do following steps one by one to search &amp; install some Plymouth themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, click &#8216;Search&#8217; icon (or press Ctrl+F) in the app window, and search &#8216;<code>plymouth-theme<\/code>&#8216;.<\/li>\n<li>Then, right-click on your desired theme package and click &#8220;Mark for Installation&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, click &#8220;Apply&#8221; to install the theme package.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Tips: you can use Ctrl+Click or Shift+Click to select more than one packages, then install them at once.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/synaptic-plymouth-themes.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46285\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/synaptic-plymouth-themes-700x399.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/synaptic-plymouth-themes-700x399.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/synaptic-plymouth-themes-300x171.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/synaptic-plymouth-themes-768x438.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/synaptic-plymouth-themes.webp 1065w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Option 2: Install Plymouth Themes from 3rd-party source<\/h4>\n<p>The popular gnome-look.org includes a few hundred of Plymouth themes, they are available to download via the link below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gnome-look.org\/browse?cat=108&amp;ord=rating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gnome-Look.org<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For choice, there are many free open-source themes available in <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/search?q=plymouth%20themes&amp;type=repositories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Github page<\/a> (need login to search).<\/p>\n<p>A Plymouth theme folder is usually made up of following files:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>.PNG<\/b> image files.<\/li>\n<li><b>themename.plymouth<\/b> file to specify theme name, script, image dir, etc.<\/li>\n<li><b>.script<\/b> file to control how the .png images to be displayed as animation.<\/li>\n<li>Other optional files.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>To manually install a plymouth theme<\/b>, just move (or copy) theme folder which contains mentioned files above, into <b>\/usr\/share\/plymouth\/themes<\/b> directory (need sudo permission).<\/p>\n<p>Some themes contain installer scripts. In the case, just run script from terminal instead to automatically install a theme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46286\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex-700x346.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex-700x346.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex-300x148.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex-768x380.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex-1536x759.webp 1536w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex-1320x653.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plymouth-theme-vortex.webp 1701w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my case, see the last screenshot, just right-click on <b>vortex-ubuntu<\/b> folder (the one under Downloads folder) and click &#8220;Open in Terminal&#8221;. In pop-up terminal window, do (replace &#8216;vortex-ubuntu&#8217; according to your theme name):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>either run the installer to install the theme:\n<pre>chmod u+x install &amp;&amp; .\/install<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>or, move the sub-folder (also named <b>vortex-ubuntu<\/b> in the case) to <code>\/usr\/share\/plymouth\/themes<\/code> via command:\n<pre>sudo mv vortex-ubuntu\/ \/usr\/share\/plymouth\/themes\/<\/pre>\n<p>Then change the ownership to root:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo chown root:root \/usr\/share\/plymouth\/themes\/vortex-ubuntu<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 2: Change Boot Animation (Plymouth) Theme<\/h3>\n<p>A theme installed as script is usually automatically applied at next startup. If you installed a theme manually, then you have to do one more step to apply it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tips: For Debian, Fedora, etc, use <code>sudo plymouth-set-default-theme THEME_NAME<\/code> command instead to change plymouth theme.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>1. First, install the theme as alternative to the default.plymouth, by running command (replace <b>vortex-ubuntu<\/b> accordingly):<\/p>\n<pre>sudo update-alternatives --install \/usr\/share\/plymouth\/themes\/default.plymouth default.plymouth \/usr\/share\/plymouth\/themes\/<b>vortex-ubuntu<\/b>\/<b>vortex-ubuntu<\/b>.plymouth 100<\/pre>\n<p>2. Then, run command to config default.plymouth, and type the corresponding number to set another as default:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/apply-plymouth.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46287\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/apply-plymouth-700x366.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/apply-plymouth-700x366.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/apply-plymouth-300x157.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/apply-plymouth-768x402.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/apply-plymouth.webp 984w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.
