It features a <strong>new desktop installer<\/strong>. So, I re-write about this how to guide for beginners, with Windows 10\/11 dual boot support.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: The new installer so far does NOT allow encryption for manually added partitions! Meaning encryption ONLY works when using entire disk for Ubuntu. See the bug reports <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/canonical\/ubuntu-desktop-provision\/issues\/417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu-desktop-provision\/+bug\/2058511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/b><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Requirements:<\/h3>\n<p>To follow this tutorial, you need to prepare following things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 8GB or larger USB stick.<\/li>\n<li>PC\/Laptop with Windows, macOS, or Linux with internet connection, for downloading .iso image and burn it into USB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 1: Download &amp; Verify Ubuntu 24.04 .iso image<\/h3>\n<p>First, select download the .iso image for Ubuntu 24.04 from either <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ubuntu.com\/download<\/a>, or via the link below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/releases.ubuntu.com\/24.04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Ubuntu 24.04<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>After downloaded the Disc image, <b>it&#8217;s better to verify the file integrity<\/b>, to make sure the downloaded file is completely same to the one in download server.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you&#8217;re on Windows, then search &amp; open <b>cmd<\/b>, and run command to print the sha256sum for downloaded file:\n<pre>cd Downloads &amp;&amp; certutil -hashfile ubuntu-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso SHA256<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>For Linux, use this command in terminal instead:\n<pre>sha256sum ~\/Downloads\/ubuntu-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>And macOS can open terminal and run command:\n<pre>shasum -a 256 ~\/Downloads\/ubuntu-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the commands above assume that you saved the iso image in Downloads folder, and replace &#8220;<i>ubuntu-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso<\/i>&#8221; if you downloaded another file.<\/p>\n<p>Once the command prints the hash code, compare it to the one in the download page. So, you can boot the target machine into a live Ubuntu system from the USB, then start installing the system.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re following this tutorial in <b>Ubuntu<\/b>, just plug-in the USB stick, then search for and launch the built-in &#8220;<b>Startup Disk Creator<\/b>&#8221; tool.<\/p>\n<p>When it opens, it auto-detect the USB devices, auto-select the .iso image (if NOT, click &#8220;Other&#8230;&#8221; button and select manually). You just need to click the &#8220;Make Startup Disk&#8221; button, and wait until the process done!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-startupdiskscreator.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46367\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-startupdiskscreator.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-startupdiskscreator.webp 641w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ubuntu-startupdiskscreator-300x271.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For <b>Windows<\/b>, <b>macOS<\/b>, and <b>other Linux<\/b>, there are quite a few other tools can do the job. If you install different Linux distro frequently, then <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2021\/06\/create-bootable-usb-installer-for-linux-via-ventoy-new-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ventoy<\/a> is the best choice. Or, you may download and use the stupid simple tool <b>Etcher<\/b> that works in the previous platforms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46368\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/etcher.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46368\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46368\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/etcher-700x453.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/etcher-700x453.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/etcher-300x194.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/etcher-768x497.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/etcher.webp 802w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-46368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Burn iso to USB via Etcher in Windows, macOS and Linux.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Step 3: Boot the Ubuntu Live System from USB<\/h3>\n<p>Now, plug the USB stick into the target machine, and boot.<\/p>\n<p>Depends on your machine, press <b>del<\/b> (the key varies on different machines, it may be Esc, F12, or else) at very beginning of boot process to launch UEFI menu and select boot from your USB. Or, go to BIOS settings, and set the USB as the first boot option.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: To avoid installing issues, it&#8217;s better to disable secure boot first! Then re-enable it after successfully installed Ubuntu.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If the machine successfully boot from USB, it will show you the screen below.<\/p>\n<p>The default &#8220;<i><u>Try or Install Ubuntu<\/u><\/i>&#8221; boot entry works great in my laptops with Intel CPU along with (and without) a dedicated GPU. But if your PC does NOT have an integrated GPU, then the second &#8220;<i><u>Ubuntu (safe graphics)<\/u><\/i>&#8221; is a good choice in case you have graphic rendering issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boot-live-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-46369\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boot-live-noble-700x389.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boot-live-noble-700x389.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boot-live-noble-300x167.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boot-live-noble.webp 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Start installing Ubuntu<\/h3>\n<p>After booting into the live Ubuntu system from USB, it should automatically launch the installer wizard. So, you can click &#8220;Next&#8221; to leave them default. Which, will use all the free un-allocated space for Ubuntu.If there&#8217;s NO free space, then it shows dialog asks to choose destination volume\/partition, then use slider-bar to shrink it to free up space for Ubuntu. There choose the destination disk, usually <b>sda<\/b> for SATA disk, or <b>nvme0n1<\/b> for NVME SSD.<\/p>\n<p>If you have multiple hard disks and can&#8217;t identify each other, then press <b>Super<\/b> (Windows Logo) on keyboard to go to overview screen. For an empty disk,, then you may click &#8220;New partition table&#8221; and create a GPT table for it.<\/p>\n<p><b>In case you don&#8217;t know if there&#8217;s important data in the volume\/partition you&#8217;re going to delete, then launch &#8220;Disks&#8221;, click mount corresponding partition, finally open Files (Nautilus file manager) to browse its content and identify. And, plug-in another USB stick to backup your important data.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Once you got enough free space, you need to <b>create following partitions<\/b> for installing Ubuntu:<\/p>\n<p><b>1. EFI (Required)<\/b> &#8211; a &#8220;VFAT&#8221; file partition with 100MB ~ 500MB size, mounted on <b>\/boot\/efi<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s already an operating system on your disk, then there MAY already have that partition (sda2 in my case). Root (Required)<\/b> &#8211; For the file system, you need to create a partition usually formatted as <b>EXT4<\/b>, with 20 GB (though as large as possible for long time use, 100GB or higher recommended). It&#8217;s configured to dual-boot with MS Windows 10 (on sda4).
