It&#8217;s pre-installed and default in Ubuntu Desktop, when you installed the system with default or full installation mode.<\/p>\n<p>The photo manager features import photos from disk or camera, organize by time-based events, tags (keywords), folders, and more. It supports basic image editing, such as crop, rotate, color adjust, straighten, and enhance photos.<\/p>\n<p>As well, it supports video and RAW photos, create wallpaper slideshow, and share your photos to major web services, including Flickr, Tumblr and YouTube.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50087\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-photomanager-700x468.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-photomanager-700x468.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-photomanager-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-photomanager-768x513.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-photomanager.webp 1103w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While the default shotwell package in Ubuntu is always old, the latest version so far has reached version 0.32.14. Which, features translation updates, fix for YouTube uploading issue, and adds <b>Native<\/b> or <b>Flatpak<\/b> in &#8216;About&#8217; dialog telling what package format the app is installed with.<\/p>\n<p>Besides building the photo manager from <a href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/shotwell\/-\/tags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source tarball<\/a>, there are 2 ways to install it in Ubuntu:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>official Flatpak package<\/b> &#8211; which however runs in sandbox.<\/li>\n<li><b>third-party Ubuntu PPA<\/b> with native .deb package.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Option 1: Install Shotwell with Flatpak package<\/h3>\n<p>Flatpak is an universal package format that works in most Linux. Meaning not only Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 25.04 mentioned above, old Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04, Debian, Fedora, Arch, etc, are also supported!<\/p>\n<p>And, <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/apps\/org.gnome.Shotwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shotwell Flatpak<\/a> is an official package that support <code>amd64<\/code> (Intel\/AMD) and <code>arm64<\/code> (e.g., Raspberry Pi) CPU architecture types.<\/p>\n<p><b>Linux Mint 21\/22<\/b> and all current <b>Fedora Workstation<\/b> (with 3rd party repository enabled) can search &amp; install the package directly from either Software Manager or GNOME Software.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47581\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-700x446.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-700x446.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-768x489.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager.webp 818w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While <b>Debian\/Ubuntu<\/b>, and other Linux may follow the steps below one by one to install it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open up a terminal window. When it opens, run command to install Flatpak daemon:\n<pre>sudo apt install flatpak<\/pre>\n<p>NOTE: Ubuntu 18.04 needs to add <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~flatpak\/+archive\/ubuntu\/stable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this PPA<\/a> first.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45732\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-700x501.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-700x501.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-768x550.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Next, add the <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flathub<\/a> repository, that contains the software package:\n<pre>flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/flathub.flatpakrepo<\/pre>\n<p>Other Linux can follow this <a href=\"https:\/\/flatpak.org\/setup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">setup guide<\/a> to enable Flatpak support.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/flathub-add.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47289\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/flathub-add-700x257.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/flathub-add-700x257.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/flathub-add-300x110.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/flathub-add.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Finally, run the command below to install the Shotwell Flatpak package:\n<pre>flatpak install flathub org.gnome.Shotwell<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-flatpak.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47580\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-flatpak-700x446.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-flatpak-700x446.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-flatpak-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-flatpak.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like native app packages, you may search and start the Flatpak app package from either start menu or GNOME overview depends on your desktop.<\/p>\n<p>If the app icon is not visible, try either log out and back in, or run the command below to start from terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak run org.gnome.Shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>And, to update the package, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak update org.gnome.Shotwell<\/pre>\n<h3>Option 2: Install Shotwell from Ubuntu PPA<\/h3>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t like running the app in sandbox environment, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+ppas?name_filter=shotwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">third-party Ubuntu PPAs<\/a> contains the native <code>.deb<\/code> packages.<\/p>\n<p>And, I&#8217;ve uploaded the most recent 0.32.14 package into this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/shotwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> with Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 25.04\/25.10, and Linux Mint 22\/21 support on both <code>amd64<\/code> and <code>armhf\/arm64<\/code> CPU platforms.<\/p>\n<p>1. To add the PPA, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> to open terminal and run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/shotwell<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password when it asks, though there&#8217;s no visual feedback, and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-unofficialppa.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47582\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-unofficialppa-700x364.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-unofficialppa-700x364.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-unofficialppa-300x156.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-unofficialppa.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Next, run command to install or upgrade the Shotwell .deb package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>NOTE: Linux Mint users need to run <code>sudo apt update<\/code> first to manually refresh system package.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/apt-shotwell.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47583\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/apt-shotwell-700x323.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/apt-shotwell-700x323.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/apt-shotwell-300x139.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/apt-shotwell.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To update the package, either run the <code>apt install<\/code> again and again, or use the graphical &#8220;<b>Software Updater<\/b>&#8221; utility.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/upgrade-shotwell.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47584\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/upgrade-shotwell-700x558.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/upgrade-shotwell-700x558.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/upgrade-shotwell-300x239.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/upgrade-shotwell.webp 722w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall Shotwell:<\/h3>\n<p>If you installed the photo manager through Ubuntu PPA, then you may run the command below to purge PPA, which also downgrade the software package to the original version:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ppa-purge &amp;&amp; sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>For choice, you may uninstall the package via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>Then, remove the PPA via:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>If you installed the Flatpak package, then use the command below to uninstall:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.gnome.Shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>Also run <code>flatpak uninstall --unused<\/code> to remove useless run-time libraries that may free up some disk spaces.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This tutorial shows how to install the most recent Shotwell photo manager and viewer (version 0.32.14 updated) in Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04, and Ubuntu 25.04.
