Here&#8217;s a PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, though unofficial.<\/p>\n<p>Kodi has an <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~team-xbmc\/+archive\/ubuntu\/ppa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official Ubuntu PPA<\/a>, which has not been updated for long time. The official package for Linux now is Flatpak that runs in sandbox environment.<\/p>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t like Flatpak or have issue running the software in sandbox, here&#8217;s an <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/kodi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> available for Ubuntu 24.04 and Linux Mint 22 users.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-about212.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48005\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-about212-700x467.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-about212-700x467.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-about212-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-about212.webp 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Kodi so far is at 21 release series that features LG webOS TV, M3U8 playlist files, Xbox for HDR10 passthrough support. The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2025\/01\/kodi-21-2-is-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">v21.2<\/a> point release was out few days ago with significant speed increase of library scans, faster artwork caching, and various bug-fixes.<\/p>\n<h3>Install Kodi 21.3 in Ubuntu 24.04 via PPA<\/h3>\n<p>The PPA so far supports only Ubuntu 24.04, because it has so many add-ons that take too much time to maintain. And, packages here are mostly backported from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deb-multimedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deb multimedia<\/a> repository.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: The PPA package seems working good in my case, but without well testing! Please report missing features or add-ons.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>1. First, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open up a terminal window. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/kodi<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password (no visual feedback) and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-ppa-unofficial.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48006\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-ppa-unofficial-700x396.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-ppa-unofficial-700x396.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-ppa-unofficial-300x170.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-ppa-unofficial.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. If you&#8217;re following this tutorial in Linux Mint, then you may run command below to refresh cache:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>3. Finally, install Kodi via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install kodi<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/apt-kodi.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48007\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/apt-kodi-700x505.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/apt-kodi-700x505.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/apt-kodi-300x216.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/apt-kodi.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The PPA also contains many audio encoder\/decoder, inputstream, and PVR addons. You may run the command below and hit <b>Tab<\/b> to list available packages:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install kodi-<\/pre>\n<p>Then replace <code>kodi-<\/code> with your desired add-on package name to install. <b>NOTE<\/b>: some old add-ons (from Ubuntu system repository) MAY refuse to install due to dependency issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-addons.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48008\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-addons-700x434.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-addons-700x434.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-addons-300x186.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-addons-768x476.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/kodi-addons.webp 986w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to revert back the stock Kodi 20.5, then open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ppa-purge &amp;&amp; sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/kodi<\/pre>\n<p>The command will install ppa-purge tool and use it to purge the PPA which also downgrade all installed packages from that repository.<\/p>\n<p>For choice, you may use the command below instead to remove the PPA repository:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/kodi<\/pre>\n<p>Then, remove Kodi packages via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove kodi*<\/pre>\n<p>Keep an eye on terminal output before answering &#8216;y\/yes&#8217;, <code>--autoremove<\/code> flag will try to remove useless packages that you might need.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to install Kodi home theater software v21.3 &#8220;Omega&#8221; via native .deb package?
