See what&#8217;s new in the desktop environment that will be default in next Ubuntu 25.04 and Fedora Workstation 42.<\/p>\n<p>First, GNOME 48 introduced <b>new core app called <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.gnome.org\/Decibels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Decibels<\/a><\/b>. It added initial <b>Wellbeing panel<\/b> in GNOME Control Center (aka Settings), allowing to view screen time usage on the device and set daily time limits. And, it now displays XMP metadata for JPEG images.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48028\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/loupe-imageediting.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48028\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48028\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/loupe-imageediting-700x488.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/loupe-imageediting-700x488.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/loupe-imageediting-300x209.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/loupe-imageediting-768x536.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/loupe-imageediting.webp 989w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loupe Image viewer now has basic editing support<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other features in the new release include new default wallpaper, prepare Vulkan and libva based hardware acceleration for GNOME Remote Desktop, as well as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Handle Epiphany webapps in GNOME Control Center.<\/li>\n<li>Add &#8220;undo&#8221; option when deleting a wallpaper.<\/li>\n<li>Rename &#8220;Color&#8221; panel to &#8220;Color Management&#8221; (Gnome Control Center)<\/li>\n<li>Fix using wifi hotspot with multiple wifi adapters<\/li>\n<li>Add screen limits schema for Gsettings.<\/li>\n<li>Fix blank screen in remote headless sessions<\/li>\n<li>Speed up thumbnail loading for Nautilus file manager.<\/li>\n<li>Fix misplaced windows and random resizes on scaled monitors<\/li>\n<li>Fix maximized X11 when using native Xwayland scaling<\/li>\n<li>Improve accessibility of keyboard backlight quick settings toggle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are as well various other improvements and bug-fixes, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/discourse.gnome.org\/t\/gnome-48-alpha-released\/26414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announce page<\/a> for the change-log and .iso image links.<\/p>\n<h3>Next GNOME 48 Dev Releases<\/h3>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/release.gnome.org\/calendar\/#releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GNOME Release Calendar<\/a> page, GNOME 48 is planned to be released on 2025-03-19.<\/p>\n<p>Before the final release, there will be a Beta and RC releases though no planned date available.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first alpha release of GNOME 48 is out today!
