For WebP image format, the release can now <b>save the EXIF data<\/b>, meaning the metadata about camera settings, date and time, and location etc information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45606\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer-700x449.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer-700x449.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer-300x193.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer-768x493.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer-1320x847.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gthumb-image-viewer.webp 1388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also for WebP images, gThumb can also read the ICC profile (if available), which is a set of data that characterizes a color input or output device like a monitor or printer.<\/p>\n<p>Other changes include using configured JPEG file format for video screenshot (gThumb support audio\/video playback through extension), translation updates and following bug-fixes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fix endlessly preferences dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Fix loading system bookmarks for the Flatpak package.<\/li>\n<li>Properly use time_t for local time.<\/li>\n<li>Remove references to wiki.gnome.org, as GNOME replaced it with a set of new solutions. See <a href=\"https:\/\/pad.gnome.org\/wiki-migration-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a> for more.<\/li>\n<li>Fix developer id<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Install gThumb 3.12.7 in Ubuntu<\/h3>\n<p>gThumb 3.12.7 has been made into Ubuntu 25.04 repository, while the app package in current Ubuntu releases&#8217; repositories is old.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no pre-build official packages. User may choose to either compile the app from <a href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/gthumb\/-\/tags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source tarball<\/a>, or use community maintained packages such as Flatpak and Ubuntu PPA.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Flatpak package<\/h4>\n<p>gThumb is available to install as <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/apps\/org.gnome.gThumb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flatpak package<\/a> for most Linux, though it runs in sandbox.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: The gThumb Flatpak package is at v3.12.6 at the moment of writing, check the link above before installing<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Debian\/Ubuntu user may first enable Flatpak support by running command below in a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T):<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install flatpak<\/pre>\n<p>Then, install the Flatpak package via the single command below:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak install https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/appstream\/org.gnome.gThumb.flatpakref<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/flatpak-gthumb.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48131\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/flatpak-gthumb-700x406.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/flatpak-gthumb-700x406.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/flatpak-gthumb-300x174.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/flatpak-gthumb-768x446.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/flatpak-gthumb.webp 874w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that, either search for &amp; launch it from start menu (may need a log out and back in), or run the command below to start it from terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak run org.gnome.gThumb<\/pre>\n<h4>Option 2: Ubuntu PPA<\/h4>\n<p>For Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, and Ubuntu 24.10, I&#8217;ve uploaded the new release packages in native <code>.deb<\/code> format into this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>User may just press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> to open up a terminal window, then run commands below one by one to add PPA, update cache, and install\/update gThumb:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/apps<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt install gthumb<\/pre>\n<p>NOTE: For Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 20.04, there&#8217;s NO jpeg-xl support in the PPA package, as the run-time library is not available in system repositories until 24.04.<\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>To uninstall the gThumb Flatpak package, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.gnome.gThumb<\/pre>\n<p>Then also run <code>flatpak uninstall --unused<\/code> to clear useless runtime libraries.<\/p>\n<p>For the PPA package, run the command below instead to uninstall:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove gthumb gthumb-data<\/pre>\n<p>Also run command to remove the PPA repository:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/apps<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>gThumb, the free open-source image viewer and organizer designed for GNOME, released new version 3.12.7 a few days ago.
