It&#8217;s revived and works in all current Ubuntu and other recent Linux Distributions!<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon is a free open-source application forked from Stormcloud (no long under active development). It displays current weather conditions and weather forecast in next few days on desktop with widget in custom color background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-widget.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48541\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-widget-700x357.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-widget-700x357.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-widget-300x153.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-widget-768x392.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-widget.webp 1069w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The app uses the free and open-source <b><a href=\"https:\/\/open-meteo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open-Meteo<\/a> weather API<\/b> for the weather information.<\/p>\n<p>In the widget header click on the setting gear icon, then you can type the name of your City, choose temperature and speed unit, select a background color, and your desired opacity, finally click on the check mark.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-settings.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48542\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-settings.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"334\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-settings.webp 334w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/typhoon-settings-180x300.webp 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, it supports running <b>multiple instance of the weather widget<\/b> on your desktop! Each with different location, different color, unit, or opacity as you set.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon was born in 2013, which&#8217;s not been updated for years. Just few days ago, the developer revived it. And, the source code is available in this <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/archisman-panigrahi\/typhoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Github page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the features mentioned above, there are new added, including <i><b>resizing widget<\/b><\/i> through bottom-right arrow and <i><b>chameleonic background<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The app basically works in my test in GNOME (both Wayland &amp; Xorg), KDE Plasma, XFCE, and other desktops. But the Flatpak package so far has few limitations as it runs in an isolated sandbox environment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><del datetime=\"2025-04-01T04:32:47+00:00\">The opacity feature does NOT work on Wayland so far.<\/del><\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2025-04-01T04:32:47+00:00\">The new chameleonic background feature so far only works on GNOME based DE on classic Xorg<\/del>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Install the new Typhoon weather widget<\/h3>\n<h4>Option 1: Ubuntu PPA<\/h4>\n<p><b>For Ubuntu<\/b>, the software developer offers an <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~apandada1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/typhoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official PPA<\/a> contains the package for Ubuntu 25.04, Ubuntu 24.10, Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 20.04, and even the old Ubuntu 18.04.<\/p>\n<p>Just press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> on keyboard to open up a terminal window, then run the commands below one by one to add PPA and install Typhoon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add PPA. For Debian\/Ubuntu, simple open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to install the daemon package:\n<pre>sudo apt install flatpak<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45732\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-700x501.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-700x501.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble-768x550.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/apt-flatpak-noble.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Next, install the app package by running command:\n<pre>flatpak install https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/appstream\/io.github.archisman_panigrahi.typhoon.flatpakref<\/pre>\n<p><i>Besides the app package itself, the command will also download &amp; install lots of run-times, e.g., GNOME platform, if you don&#8217;t have them!<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/flatpak-typhoon.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49419\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/flatpak-typhoon-700x457.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/flatpak-typhoon-700x457.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/flatpak-typhoon-300x196.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/flatpak-typhoon.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOTE: first time installing Flatpak package may need a log out and back in to make app icon visible.<\/p>\n<p>In addition for <b>Arch Linux<\/b> based systems, Typhoon is also available through <a href=\"https:\/\/aur.archlinux.org\/packages\/typhoon-git\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AUR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>To uninstall Typhoon PPA package, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and use command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove typhoon<\/pre>\n<p>And, you may remove the PPA by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:apandada1\/typhoon<\/pre>\n<p>For the Flatpak package, run the command below to uninstall:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak uninstall --delete-data io.github.archisman_panigrahi.typhoon<\/pre>\n<p>You may also remove useless run-times by running <code>flatpak uninstall --unused<\/code>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember &#8216;Typhoon&#8217;, the stylish desktop weather widget?
