While, Ubuntu 22.04 users may build the package from the source tarball.<\/p>\n<p>This tutorial is tested and works in Ubuntu with <b>G&#8217;MIC 3.5.5<\/b>\u00a0and:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>GIMP 3.0.x Deb from PPA.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>GIMP 3.0.x official AppImage.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the <b>Flatpak<\/b> package, just run the command below instead to install the plugin:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP.Plugin.GMic<\/pre>\n<h3>Option 1: Install G&#8217;MIC-Qt Plugin via official .zip Archive<\/h3>\n<p>The official plugin so far is marked for Ubuntu 25.04, though it also works in my case in Ubuntu 24.04\/24.10.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, go to G&#8217;MIC website and select download the GIMP 3.0 plugin for Ubuntu 25.04.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/gmic.eu\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download G&#8217;MIC-Qt Plugin<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-gmic-gimp30.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48616\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-gmic-gimp30.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-gmic-gimp30.webp 630w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-gmic-gimp30-300x159.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> After downloaded the archive, do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>open your Downloads folder, and extract the .zip archive you just downloaded.<\/li>\n<li>navigate to the extracted folder, then copy <b>gmic_gimp_qt<\/b> sub-folder.<\/li>\n<li>navigate to <code>Home<\/code> -&gt; <code>.config<\/code> (press Ctrl+H to view\/hide) -&gt; <code>GIMP<\/code> -&gt; <code>3.0<\/code> -&gt; <code>plug-ins<\/code>. Finally, paste the <b>gmic_gimp_qt<\/b> into that directory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOTE 1: the <code>.config\/GIMP\/3.0\/plug-ins<\/code> directory does not exist until you launch GIMP 3.0 for the first time.<br \/>\n<b>NOTE 2: GIMP plugins must be placed under sub-folders, and the sub-folder name and plugin executable filename must be same.<\/b> In the case, the &#8216;gmic_gimp_qt&#8217; sub-folder contains a &#8216;gmic_gimp_qt&#8217; executable file.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/install-gmic355.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49408\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/install-gmic355-700x446.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/install-gmic355-700x446.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/install-gmic355-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/install-gmic355-768x489.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/install-gmic355.webp 1207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Install dependency libraries.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The current 3.5.3 and 3.5.4 were built with Qt5. You need to install some run-time libraries for it to work.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> to open up a terminal window and run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install libfftw3-double3 libqt5core5t64 libqt5gui5t64 libqt5network5t64 libqt5widgets5t64<\/pre>\n<p><b>NOTE: for GIMP 3 AppImage, you also need to install &#8220;libgimp-3.0-0&#8221; package, either from Ubuntu repository (25.04) or 3rd-party PPA (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/gimp-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my PPA<\/a>).<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/apt-gmic-deps.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48618\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/apt-gmic-deps-700x475.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/apt-gmic-deps-700x475.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/apt-gmic-deps-300x204.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/apt-gmic-deps.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>4.<\/b> Finally, re-launch the GIMP image editor. If everything&#8217;s goes well, you should see the &#8220;G&#8217;MIC-Qt&#8230;&#8221; option under Filters menu. And, it&#8217;s grayed out until you open\/create an image.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48619\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic-700x367.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic-700x367.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic-300x157.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic-768x402.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic-1320x692.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-gmic.webp 1374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If NOT, try going to &#8220;Edit -&gt; Preferences -&gt; Folders -&gt; Plug-ins&#8221;, then make sure it includes the plugin directory mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-folders.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48621\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-folders-700x450.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-folders-700x450.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-folders-300x193.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-folders-768x494.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-folders.webp 1055w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>5. workaround for the plugin crash.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When launching the plugin from GIMP menu, it may pop-up a crash dialog as the screenshot below shows you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gmic-error.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48620\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gmic-error-700x209.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gmic-error-700x209.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gmic-error-300x90.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gmic-error-768x230.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gmic-error.webp 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By launching GIMP 3.0 from terminal and then launch G&#8217;MIC, it will output something look like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display wayland-0<br \/>\nqt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin &#8220;xcb&#8221; in &#8220;&#8221; even though it was found.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_49409\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/start-gimp-terminal.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49409\" class=\"size-large wp-image-49409\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/start-gimp-terminal-700x414.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/start-gimp-terminal-700x414.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/start-gimp-terminal-300x177.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/start-gimp-terminal-768x454.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/start-gimp-terminal.webp 1189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">start GIMP from terminal to reproduce the issue &amp; see what&#8217;s wrong<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is something to do with Qt platform environment. To workaround the issue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, install <code>qtwayland5<\/code> library:\n<pre>sudo apt install qtwayland5<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then, try launching GIMP 3 via:\n<pre>QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland gimp-3.0<\/pre>\n<p>For AppImage, replace <code>gimp-3.0<\/code> in last command by drag&#8217;n&#8217;dropping the AppImage package into terminal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If it works, then make it permanent by editing the desktop entry (for GIMP PPA package only):<\/p>\n<pre>sudo nano \/usr\/share\/applications\/gimp.desktop<\/pre>\n<p>Then the replace &#8220;<b>Exec<\/b>&#8221; line with <b>Exec=env QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland gimp-3.0 %U<\/b> and save.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: The change will be overridden by GIMP package updates. Without editing it again and again, you may copy the file content to <code>gimp.desktop<\/code> file (create manually) under Home\/.local\/share\/applications directory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-set-env.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48622\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-set-env-700x528.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-set-env-700x528.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-set-env-300x226.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/gimp-set-env.webp 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Option 2: Manually build the G&#8217;MIC plugin<\/h3>\n<p><b>For Ubuntu 22.04<\/b>, the official .zip archive so far does NOT work. You need to build from the source tarball by yourself, which also works in Ubuntu 24.04 and higher.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> to open up a terminal window. When it opens to add my <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/gimp-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIMP 3 PPA<\/a>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/gimp-3<\/pre>\n<p>This PPA is required for the <code>libgimp-3.0-dev<\/code> dependency library. For Linux Mint, you also need to run <code>sudo apt update<\/code> to refresh cache afterward.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Next, run command to install all the dependency libraries for building the G&#8217;MIC source:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install git wget build-essential libgimp-3.0-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev libgexiv2-dev libfftw3-dev libtiff-dev libjpeg-dev libopenexr-dev libwebp-dev qtbase5-dev qttools5-dev-tools<\/pre>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Next, run command to download the source tarball, extract, and navigate to the source folder:<\/p>\n<pre>wget https:\/\/gmic.eu\/files\/source\/gmic_3.5.5.tar.gz &amp;&amp; tar zxvf gmic_3.5.5.tar.gz &amp;&amp; cd gmic-3.5.5\/src<\/pre>\n<p>As time goes on, it will roll out new releases. In the case, you need to replace the version number accordingly! Or, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/gmic.eu\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G&#8217;MIC website<\/a> for the updated guide.<\/p>\n<p><b>4.<\/b> Finally, run command to build G&#8217;MIC plugin for GIMP:<\/p>\n<pre>make gimp<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/build-gmic.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48623\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/build-gmic-700x487.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/build-gmic-700x487.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/build-gmic-300x209.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/build-gmic-768x535.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/build-gmic.webp 954w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>5.<\/b> Depends on your computer, the last command may take quite a few minutes.
