For users who have third-party app packages installed in Ubuntu 24.10, e.g., through PPAs, update manager will incorrectly remove these foreign packages during upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04. See this bug report for details.

foreign packages

2. For KUbuntu 24.10 with Steam installed via either official
.deb
or steam-installer package, the desktop will not boot after upgraded to KUbuntu 25.04, as the
kubuntu-desktop
package is however removed . See this bug report.

3. For Qt based flavors, e.g., LUbuntu and KUbuntu, the upgrade process may fail due to the frontend port to PyQt6 (already fixed for Ubuntu 24.10). See this bug report.

4. For Ubuntu Studio, the upgrade process may fail as
ubuntustudio-desktop
somehow marked for autoremoval and it got removed, along with all dependencies. See this bug report for details.

There may be even more upgrading issues, see this pages for all bug reports.

When will it be back

The upgrade will be re-enabled very soon. For those who care about it, just keep an eye on this thread.

If you insist on upgrading your Ubuntu Desktop, then you may try the methods below until the upgrade channel re-opened:

1. Launch update manager and try upgrading through devel channel, which will also upgrade to 25.04 stable if everything goes well.

update-manager -d

2. Or, use the command below to do the job from terminal:

do-release-upgrade -d

For Ubuntu 24.10 users who are going to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu 25.04, the upgrade channel was temporarily suspended due to bugs!
