Meaning for photos taken by cameras or phones have location services enabled, the image viewer will show where they were taken with latitude and longitude location data.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-gps.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49719\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-gps-700x428.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-gps-700x428.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-gps-300x184.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-gps-768x470.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-gps.webp 1216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, by enabling the new &#8220;Open Map&#8221; extension in the Preferences dialog, it will display a &#8220;Map&#8221; section in image properties, allowing to click open the location using the OpenStreetMap <em>free wiki world map<\/em> service. So that you can see exactly where it is in world map.<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, the release added an option in Preferences dialog, allowing to <b>hide the white border<\/b> (aka frame) of the image you&#8217;re viewing. Which, however does not work for thumbnails.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49720\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border-700x380.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border-700x380.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border-300x163.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border-768x417.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border-1320x717.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-border.webp 1411w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>gThumb 3.12.8 also updated the video viewer to rotate videos respecting the orientation tag, added ability to sort images by creation time, and added support for the AdobeRGB profile.<\/p>\n<p>It now applies the embedded ICC profile for TIFF, applies the color space specified in EXIF data for PNG, and saves the color profile as well for AVIF images.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-adobergb.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49721\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-adobergb-700x466.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-adobergb-700x466.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-adobergb-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-adobergb-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb-adobergb.webp 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lossless WEBP and TIFF rotation by setting EXIF orientation tag.<\/li>\n<li>Transform the profile to sRGB before saving an image with a profile.<\/li>\n<li>Fix broken thumbnail panic.<\/li>\n<li>Fix thumbnails not updated after saving an image.<\/li>\n<li>Fix date and tag selectors on Wayland.<\/li>\n<li>Use a darker gray for the background in image viewer.<\/li>\n<li>Translation updates and various other bug-fixes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Install gThumb 3.12.8<\/h3>\n<p>gThumb does NOT provide official installer packages. Besides building it from the <a href=\"https:\/\/download.gnome.org\/sources\/gthumb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source code<\/a>, you may install it through either Flatpak, Snap, or Ubuntu PPA.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Snap package<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For modern Intel\/AMD platform, there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/snapcraft.io\/gthumb-unofficial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snap package<\/a> that can be easily from either Ubuntu Software or App Center, <del datetime=\"2025-09-23T02:56:46+00:00\">though it&#8217;s NOT updated to v3.12.8 at the moment of writing.<\/del><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb3128-snap.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49723\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb3128-snap-700x416.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb3128-snap-700x416.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb3128-snap-300x178.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb3128-snap-768x456.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gthumb3128-snap.webp 1097w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Flatpak package<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Like Snap, <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/en\/apps\/org.gnome.gThumb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Flatpak<\/a> runs in sandbox environment and works in most Linux distributions on both <code>amd64<\/code> and <code>arm64<\/code> platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu users may simply open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the 2 commands one by one to install the package:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First <a href=\"https:\/\/flatpak.org\/setup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enable flatpak support<\/a>:\n<pre>sudo apt install flatpak<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then, install gThumb Flatpak package:\n<pre>flatpak install https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/appstream\/org.gnome.gThumb.flatpakref<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the app icon is not visible after installation, either log out and back in or run the command below to start it from terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak run org.gnome.gThumb<\/pre>\n<p>And, you may replace <code>run<\/code> with <code>update<\/code> in last command to check &amp; install updates regularly.<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Ubuntu PPA<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu users who prefer the native <code>.deb<\/code> package, I&#8217;ve uploaded the package into this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> for Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, 24.04, 25.04, and 25.10 on <code>amd64<\/code>, <code>arm64\/armhf<\/code> platforms.<\/p>\n<p>To install it, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run commands below one by one:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/apps<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt install gthumb<\/pre>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>To uninstall the Snap package, use Ubuntu Software or App Center.<\/p>\n<p>To uninstall the Flatpak package, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.gnome.gThumb<\/pre>\n<p>Optionally, you may run <code>flatpak uninstall --unused<\/code> to remove useless run-time libraries.<\/p>\n<p>For the PPA package, uninstall it via command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove gthumb gthumb-data<\/pre>\n<p>And, remove the Ubuntu PPA by using either &#8220;Software &amp; Updates&#8221; under &#8220;Other Software&#8221; tab, or running command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/apps<\/pre>\n<p>Also run <code>sudo apt update<\/code> to refresh cache afterward, though it should be done automatically.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>gThumb, the Gnome image viewer, browser, and organizer application, released new 3.12.8 version in last week.
