So far, Ubuntu has 10 official flavors, they are listed in this <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/desktop\/flavors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu web-page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu always requires the official flavors to go through a qualification process for every releases, especially for LTS. For next Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the following flavors have been approved with three year LTS qualification.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Ubuntu Budgie<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Ubuntu Kylin<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Xubuntu<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Lubuntu<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Edubuntu<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Ubuntu Studio<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Ubuntu Cinnamon<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What About KUbuntu 26.04<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_50196\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50196\" class=\"size-large wp-image-50196\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kubuntu2404-700x436.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kubuntu2404-700x436.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kubuntu2404-300x187.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kubuntu2404-768x478.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kubuntu2404-1320x821.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kubuntu2404.webp 1504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KUbuntu 24.04<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>KUbuntu is not mentioned in the announcement.<\/b> And, I didn&#8217;t see the qualification request for KUbuntu 26.04 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.ubuntu.com\/archives\/technical-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technical Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The KUbuntu developer, <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~scarlettmoore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scarlett Gately Moore<\/a>, was in a car accident in last July. Though back to work now, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scarlettgatelymoore.dev\/kde-snaps-and-life-spirits-are-up-but-i-need-a-little-help-please\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">needs a little help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~rikmills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rik Mills<\/a>, another KUbuntu developer who&#8217;s also Ubuntu core developer, is actively building packages for Ubuntu 26.04 and backporting Plasma desktop and KDE frameworks for current Ubuntu release through <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~kubuntu-ppa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KUbuntu PPAs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IMO, KDE Plasma is so popular and maintainers are still actively working, there&#8217;s no reason to exclude KUbuntu 26.04 as one of the next official LTS flavors.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity Excluded<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_46717\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46717\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46717\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ubuntu-mate-noble-700x438.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ubuntu-mate-noble-700x438.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ubuntu-mate-noble-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ubuntu-mate-noble-768x480.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ubuntu-mate-noble-1320x825.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ubuntu-mate-noble.webp 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ubuntu MATE 24.04<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ubuntu MATE is Ubuntu with MATE desktop environment, a continuation of the classic GNOME 2. It was firstly approved as official flavor when it was in version 15.04.<\/p>\n<p>MATE in current Ubuntu releases is still at version 1.26, while the latest MATE 1.28 has been released for more than a year. Debian upstream has started <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2025\/10\/mate-1-28-coming-to-ubuntu-debian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">packaging MATE 1.28 for Forky and Ubuntu 26.04<\/a>, though Ubuntu MATE developer missed the LTS qualification.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu-mate.community\/t\/the-future-of-ubuntu-mate\/30518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the future of Ubuntu MATE<\/a> discussion, it seems that the project lead, <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~flexiondotorg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Wimpress<\/a>, is now having other interests and obligations (<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/noughtylinux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u00f8ughty Linux<\/a>), so he didn&#8217;t apply the re-qualification requests.<\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu Unity, the official flavor since 22.10, the project lead <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~rs2009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rudra Saraswat<\/a>, is too busy because of university exams and tests.<\/p>\n<p>Other members lack of knowledge to maintain the project, and Maik Adamietz asked for help by <a href=\"https:\/\/discourse.ubuntu.com\/t\/regarding-ubuntu-unity-and-a-call-for-help\/71095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this thread in discrouse<\/a> few months ago, but without luck.
