Meaning that if you use shotwell as default image viewer, you can now double-click on images in the trash to open them. However, only for viewing them in shotwell image viewer but not importing via the manager window.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50695\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50695\" class=\"size-large wp-image-50695\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-trash-700x443.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-trash-700x443.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-trash-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-trash-768x487.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-trash.webp 1198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">view image in trash<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not only <code>trash:\/\/\/<\/code>, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/shotwell\/-\/commit\/aa4226f36a3bd09d8ccfbc092a7b83993946200d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> other <b>GIO URIs<\/b> are support supported via the built-in viewer, though I didn&#8217;t test if it works for remote images mounted via <code>smb:\/\/<\/code> or <code>ftp:\/\/<\/code> protocols.<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, the new 0.32.15 version added caption to screenshots, fixed image descriptions in doc, and added new FAQ URL, as well fixed writable detection for AVIF images.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50696\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-dark-700x466.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-dark-700x466.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-dark-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-dark-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-dark.webp 1103w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Others are mostly translation updates. See the NEWs file in <a href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/shotwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source page<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<h3>Get Shotwell 0.32.15<\/h3>\n<p>Linux Mint 21\/22 and Fedora Workstation (with 3rd party repository enabled) can search &amp; install the official <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/en\/apps\/org.gnome.Shotwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flatpak package<\/a> directly from Software Manager or GNOME Software.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47581\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-700x446.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-700x446.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager-768x489.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shotwell-mintsoftwaremanager.webp 818w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While other Linux may do the 3 steps below one by one to get the package:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/flatpak.org\/setup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enable flatpak<\/a> support. For Debian\/Ubuntu, simply run command:\n<pre>sudo apt install flatpak<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Next, run command to install Shotwell flatpak package:\n<pre>flatpak install https:\/\/dl.flathub.org\/repo\/appstream\/org.gnome.Shotwell.flatpakref<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>And, to update the package, use command:\n<pre>flatpak update org.gnome.Shotwell<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Ubuntu, Shotwell is pre-installed if you have Ubuntu Desktop installed in &#8220;Extended selection&#8221; mode, though it&#8217;s a bit outdated.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a snap package available in App Center (Ubuntu Software) maintained by Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu), though not updated at the moment of writing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50697\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-snapappcenter-700x472.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-snapappcenter-700x472.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-snapappcenter-300x202.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-snapappcenter-768x518.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shotwell-snapappcenter.webp 966w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t like Snap or Flatpak which run in sandbox environment, I&#8217;ve built the new release package (.deb) into this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/shotwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> for Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, and 25.10.<\/p>\n<p>Simply, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run 3 commands below one by one to add PPA and install shotwell .deb package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/shotwell\r\nsudo apt update\r\nsudo apt install shotwell<\/pre>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>To uninstall the PPA as well as native .deb package, use commands:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/shotwell\r\nsudo apt update\r\nsudo apt remove shotwell shotwell-common<\/pre>\n<p>To uninstall the Flatpak package, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>flatpak uninstall org.gnome.Shotwell<\/pre>\n<p>And uninstall Snap package by using either App Center or Ubuntu Software.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shotwell, the photo manager and image viewer application for GNOME, released new 0.32.15 version today.
