After that, share that encrypted file to your friends or upload to the cloud, and only the ones who have the passphrase can decrypt then read the file content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/encyprted-gpg.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50867\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/encyprted-gpg-700x439.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/encyprted-gpg-700x439.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/encyprted-gpg-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/encyprted-gpg-768x482.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/encyprted-gpg.webp 987w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, the app is based on GPG, the free open-source tool that many Linux Distributions use for signing software repositories, and Email Clients (e.g., Thunderbird) use it for end-to-end encryption and and digital signatures.<\/p>\n<p>It by default uses <b>AES256<\/b> cipher algorithm for passphrase based encryption in all current Ubuntu releases. It&#8217;s very secure as long as your passphrase is long and strong enough.<\/p>\n<p><b>And, advanced users may use the commands below instead to encrypt or decrypt files.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To encrypt a file with a password:\n<pre>gpg --symmetric input_file<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>To decrypt a GPG file:\n<pre>gpg --output output_file --decrypt input_file.gpg<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both commands will pop-up a dialog ask to input your passphrase.<\/p>\n<p>For choice, add <code>--batch --pinentry-mode loopback --passphrase \"your_passphrase\"<\/code> flags before <code>--symmetric<\/code> or <code>--decrypt<\/code> to tell the passphrase within the command, which may be useful for server use.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Install Hideout<\/h3>\n<p>The source of the app is available in Github via <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/trikko\/hideout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu, it provides <b>official snap package<\/b> (so far only for modern Intel\/AMD platform) that can be easily installed from either App Center or Ubuntu Software.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50868\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-snap-700x456.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-snap-700x456.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-snap-300x195.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-snap-768x500.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-snap.webp 1001w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: The snap package so far has a conflict to AppArmor, try Flatpak or install snap in dev mode via the command below:<\/b><\/p>\n<pre>sudo snap install hideout --devmode<\/pre>\n<p>Linux Mint and Fedora Workstation can install the app from either Software Manager or GNOME Software through the <strong>official <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/en\/apps\/it.andreafontana.hideout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flatpak package<\/a><\/strong> (support both <code>amd64<\/code> and <code>arm64<\/code>\/<code>aarch64<\/code>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50870\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-mint-700x501.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-mint-700x501.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-mint-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-mint-768x549.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hideout-mint.webp 861w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While, other Linux Distributions may do the steps below one by one to install the Flatpak package:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/en\/setup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enable Flatpak support<\/a>.
